Practical Experiment No. 5: Brewster Angle Determination Physics Lab

The document describes an experiment to verify Brewster's law and determine the Brewster angle. It provides the aim, formulas, observations from a table of measurements of current at different angles of rotation of a glass plate, calculations using the Brewster equation to find an angle of 58.10 degrees, and a graph of current versus angle of rotation. The result is that the measured Brewster's angle for a topaz surface in air is 58.10 degrees, with a 0.01% error.

PRACTICAL EXPERIMENT NO.

5
BREWSTER ANGLE DETERMINATION
PHYSICS LAB (1)

SUBMITTED BY
NAME: ADITYA JAMWAL
ENROLLMENT NUMBER:20103283
BATCH: B10

AIM:
To verify the Brewster's law and to find the Brewster's angle.

FORMULA USED:
The maximum polarization of the reflected ray occurs when the reflected ray is
perpendicular to the refracted ray. This is called the Brewster’s law.

BREWSTER EQUATION

Where, μ2 is the refractive index of the reflecting surface and μ1 is the refractive
index of the surrounding medium. The refracted ray so produced will be partially
polarized. As the refractive index changes the polarizing angle differs but it is
independent of the wavelength of light used.

OBSERVATIONS:
AIR (μ1=1)

TOPAZ (μ2 = 1.607)

Hence verified.

Percent Error:
• % Error in calculating Brewster’s Angle = (58.11-58.10)/58.11 = 0.01 %

RESULT:
The Brewster’s Angle for given material (topaz) in medium (air) = 58.10
