Securing Wireless Networks Case Study

UWB is a short-range wireless communication protocol that uses radio waves and operates at a higher frequency than other technologies. It has a very low spectral density which reduces interference. UWB allows for high-speed data transmission and precise location services. It can eliminate the need for other secure access technologies by automatically verifying a person's credentials and allowing entry to secured areas as they approach. Examples of UWB improving security in a hands-free manner include enabling keyless entry and starting of cars using smartphones, and enhancing home security and surveillance systems with features like live video doorbells.

Discuss the Secure Access Experiences Using Ultra-Wideband (UWB) Technology.

Ultra-Wideband (UWB) is a communication protocol that is short range and wireless

which uses radio waves to operate. It operates at a higher frequency as compared to its

counterparts. UWB is a technology technique which spreads radio energy over a vast wide

frequency band using very less spectral density. Low spectral density reduces the potential of

interference which are common in other radio systems. High bandwidth of UWB allows high

data transmission for communication devices and high precision for location devices like GPS,

etc.

UWB technology is the future of wireless technology. It can eliminate all other types of

secure access technologies like biometric scanner, phone reader, etc. that were required to enter a

secured area. With growing use of wireless technology, smartphones and with UWB technology

implemented, it will allow an individual to access a secure area without any additional

intervention or any additional intentional action. Example: a secure area that has implemented

UWB technology, an individual can approach a door and it will automatically open and close as

soon as the individual is outside the secure area. This is possible because of UWB technology

which monitors the individual’s approach, verifies their security credentials and allows them

entry to secured areas.

UWB allows the users to have hands free access to secure places or devices. Few security

devices that are using UWB technology to improve security and make it hassle free are as

follows:

 Secure Car Access Solutions: Many car safety solution companies are creating scalable

and robust car access and safety solution using UWB technology. UWB technology
combined with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and Near Field Communication (NFC) was

used to create a seamless security system which uses a digital key solution , that enable’s

the user to unlock and start the car using their smartphones.

 Home Security and Surveillance Systems: Modern day doorbell is more than a buzzer

that alerts individuals that someone is at their doorstep. Modern day doorbell is a very

vital part of the home security and surveillance system. UWB technology paired with

Bluetooth and other wireless technologies connect the doorbell which gives a live

feedback to the individual thru their smartphone. Users can view and monitor their

doorstep from anywhere in the world.
