KIRLOSKAR BROTHERS LIMITED

PROCEDURE No. : CT19206001

KIRLOSKARVADI 416 308.
PROCEDURE FOR TESTING OF REVISION No. : 0
SUBMERSIBLE PUMPS - NS DATE : 01/01/2006
PAGE : 1/4

1. INTRODUCTION
This procedure is applicable to witness performance testing of sewage
submersible pump type ‘NS’ at Pump Testing Laboratory of Kirloskar
Brothers Limited, Kirloskarvadi.

The procedure described here shall be employed for testing of the pump
individually without reference to final installation condition. The testing
arrangement shall be generally as per layout drawing number-
MA 91050 2 enclosed herewith.

2. PURPOSE OF THE TEST

2.1 The performance test will be conducted for verifying Head,

Discharge, motor input, overall efficiency.

2.2 Range of the performance test-

2.2.1 Readings of Head, Power, Discharge will be taken at five points.

* One point as near as possible to rated capacity and head (duty
Head.)
* Two points above rated head in the operating range
* One point below rated head
* One point near to shut off.

2.2.2 Pump is having inbuilt motor in it, hence both pump & motor
parameters are checked during performance testing

2.2.3 The liquid used in testing will be water at ambient temperature

(45 Deg. Max.)

2.2.4 The duration of test shall be sufficient to attain accurate and

consistent test results. Approx. duration will be 1 hour.

2.2.5 Acceptance standard for testing parameters – ISO 9906 Gr.- 2 or

– As mentioned in the order.

2.2.6 Tolerance at duty point – As mentioned in relevant testing standard

or order acceptance.

3. TESTING APPARATUS

Calibration certificates for measuring instruments like Wattmeter,

Pressure Gauge, Ammeters,Voltmeters and frequency meter will be
furnished at the time of test and along with the Test Report.

3.1 Speed of test –

The actual speed of rotation will be not be taken since subject pump is
submerged in the water, hence frequency will be noted at the time of
testing.

3.2 The test condition will be obtained by throttling a valve in the

delivery pipe.

4. PROCEDURE FOR MEASUREMENT OF DISCHARGE, HEAD, POWER

INPUT AND SPEED OF ROTATION

4.1 Discharge Measurement –

The discharge will be measured either by electronic flow meter or
‘V’ notch / Rectangular weir or other device depending upon
discharge at full open flow of the pump.

4.2 Head Measurement –

Delivery head will be measured by suitable Bourdon type pressure
gauge. The gauge will be calibrated on dead weight gauge tester
before actual testing of the pump.

4.3 Measurement of Power Input –

The power input will be determined from measurement of the
electrical power input to the motor of tested efficiency coupled to
the pump. The electrical power input to the motor will be measured
by Two Wattmeter Method.

4.4 Measurement of noise level and vibration level - not applicable

4.5 The readings shall be recorded in stabilized condition simultaneously

and only after verifying that the readings taken are logical.

5. INSTRUMENTS EMPLOYED AND ACCURACY OF MEASUREMENT

Quantity Instrument Overall Accuracy (within)

Discharge Rectangular Weir / +/- 1.5 %
V Notch/ Flowmeter
Head Bourdon type Pressure +/-1 % of full scale
Gauge deflection
Power Wattmeter, voltmeter, +/-0.5 % of full scale
ammeter. deflection

6. ANALYSIS OF TESTS

Test data obtained at the respective frequencies are converted to the 50

c/s frequency.

Discharge Qsp = Q (Nsp / N)

Total Head Hsp = H (N sp / N )2
Motor Input Power Psp = P (Nsp / N )3
Overall efficiency % efficiency Sp = % efficiency

Where,
suffix ‘sp’ implies specified.
Q - Discharge in lps
H - Total Head In m
P - Pump Input in Kw N - Frequency in Hz
Nsp – Specified Frequency in Hz

Overall efficiency will remain unchanged.

7. TOTAL HEAD CALCULATIONS :-

Total Head (H) = Delivery gauge reading (Hd)+

+ Gauge position correction (α)
+ Velocity head correction (V²/2g) [Vd²]
---------
( where g = 9.81 m/sec² ) 2g

8. EFFICIENCY CALCULATIONS :-

8.1 Motor Input in kW = Summation of wattmeter reading

x Wattmeter Constant

8.2 Pump Output in kW

Total Head (H) in m x Discharge (Q) in lps x Sp.gravity

=
102

Pump output
8.3 Overall efficiency % = X 100%
Motor input

NOTE : Since this being a motor-pump unit, measurement of overall efficiency

is applicable. Efficiency of pump & motor shall not be calculated individually.
Also motor calibration is not applicable for this type of pump as the speed of the
motor cannot be measured during testing condition due to submerged unit.
