Methodlogy For Construction of Mastic Asphalt As Per Morth Section:515
Methodlogy For Construction of Mastic Asphalt As Per Morth Section:515
MORTH SECTION:515
1. SCOPE
The work shall consist of constructing single layer of mastic asphalt wearing course for bridge decks.
2. Material
d. Filler - Lime.
3. Mastic Cooker - Comprises of separate compartments for different fractions of aggregates, filler
and hot bitumen.
Hand tools: Shovels, wooden float, wire brush, steel scraper, thermometers, concrete nails,
measuring tape, steel scale.
Lying of mastic asphalt shall be suspended while free-standing water is present on the surface to be
covered, or during rain, fog & dust storms. During rainy season, bituminous surface shell be blown of
with a high pressure air jet to remove excess moisture on the surface on which mastic asphalt has to
be laid. Mastic asphalt shell not be laid on the surface whose air temperature is less than 10 oC.
Preparation of base:
The surface shall be thoroughly swept clean free from dust and foreign matter using wire brush, steel
scraper and tractor compressor. Lying shall be suspended in case of moist surface, dust storm. Tack coat
(Rapid Setting Emulsion) shall be applied to the prepared concrete surface at the rate of 0.20-0.25
kg/sqm before laying mastic asphalt or as directed by the engineer.
Mastic mix shall be prepared in the mastic cooker to the temperature not more than 210 oC. Proportion
of aggregate, filler and bitumen shall be as per the approved mix design.
Preparation of mix:
Step 1During the first stage, 16.0 % of the total dry mix, filler shell be heated for an hour at a
temperature 170 to 210 degree Celsius.
Step 2 About the total quantity of bitumen 10/20 I.e. 14.0 % heated at 170 to 180 degree Celsius
shall be mixed with filler & shall be allowed to be heated for some time with temperature not exceeding
210 degree Celsius.
Step 3 Now 35.0 %fine aggregate of the total dry mix shell be introduced to the heating chamber
along with the remaining quantity of bitumen. The whole mixture consisting of fine aggregate, Filler &
Bitumen shall be allowed to be heated for another one hour.
Step 4 In the second stage, 35 % of coarse aggregate of the total dry mix shall be mixed with the
above mixed material. Now the total mixture shall be heated & thoroughly mixed for a period of three
hours at a temperature 170 to 210 degree Celsius.
Hot mastic mix shell be transported to the laying site by wheel barrow and spread to the tracked
surface using wooden floats. Laying shell be done in one coat at temperature 175 to 210 oC.Any blow
holes appeared to the surface shell be punctured wheel the mix is not and the surface is smoothened by
further floating.
Joints :
All constructions joints shell be made by warming existing mastic asphalt by the application of an excess
quantity of hot mix which after words shell be trimmed to get the smooth surface.
Surface finish:
The Mastic Asphalt surface can be having poor skid resistance after floating. In order to provide
resistance to skidding, the mastic asphalt after spreading, while still hot and in a plastic condition, shall
be covered with a layer of stone aggregate. This aggregate shall be 13.2mm size. The chips shall then
applied at the rate of 0.005 cum per 10 sq.m and rolled otherwise pressed into the surface of the mastic
layer when temperature of the mastic asphalt is not less than 100 degree Celsius.
Traffic shall be allowed only when the temperature of the mastic asphalt is cooled to the day
temperature.
Asphalt laying team (Workman) shall wear personal protective equipments while preparing, transporting
and laying hot mastic mix.
