Variations of Volleyball
1. What are the different variations of volleyball?
Beach Ball Volleyball
This game can either be used as a warm-up game or a competitive game. The
objective of this game is to see how many times a player can pass the beach ball
around by striking it without it hitting the ground. Instead of using a ball used in
ordinary volleyball game, a beach ball will be used here. The team will paly as they
would a volleyball and try to keep the ball from bouncing on their side of the court and
instead try to make the ball bounce to the opponent’s side of the court
Bossaball
Bossaball is a relatively new addition to the world of volleyball. Created in Spain in
2005, bossaball combines volleyball, soccer, and gymnastics. The game is played on
an inflatable court with trampolines. Players may hit or even kick the ball over the net
(kicking a volleyball is against the rules in international play).
Bribol
This is a sport that is similar to the aquatic's variation of a volleyball. This game had
originated in Birigue, Brazil in the 1960’s by Prof. Dario Miguel Pedro. Biribol is played
in a pool, which is about 8 meters in length, 4 meters in width, and 1.30 meters in
depth. There is a net in the middle of the pool and the ball used is similar to the ball
used in water polo but smaller in diameter
Ecua-Volley
This is a variant of volleyball invented and played in Ecuador. Its official name is
Ecuavoley. In this game, there are three players in every team: the setter (colocador),
the flyer (volador), and the server (servidor). The flyer plays behind the setter and
server and runs quickly from one side to another to recover the ballfor the server. The
server sets the ball in the air so that the setter can pass the ball over the net. The
setter places the ball on the opposite court in a strategic manner, in an attempt to
deceive the other team or where it will land
Footvolley
This is a sport which is a combination of beach volleyball and football (soccer). This
game was created in Brazil by Octavio de Moraes in 1965 on the Rio de Janeiro’s
Copacabana Beach, and was first known as pevoley, which literally means foot volley.
This game is essentially a beach volleyball except that the players are not able to use
their hands. The rules are basically the same as in beach volleyball
Hoover Ball
This is a medicine-ball game invented in 1929 by Admiral Joel T. Boone, physician to
US President Herbert Hoover, in order to keep President Hoover physically fit. This
sport was nameless until 1931, when a reporter from The New York Times named it
“Hoover ball.” Hoover ball is played on a court measuring 20m by 9m. A 6-pound (2.7
kg) medicine ball and a 9-foot volleyball net are used in the game, which is scored just
like tennis. Teams consist of two to four players. The ball is served from the back
line, thrown over the net, and, in order to prevent the serving team from scoring a
point, the other team must catch the ball on the fly and immediately return it from the
point in which the ball was caught. If a team fails to serve or return the ball inbounds,
a point will be given to the other team
International Volleyball
Each team has six players, and teams have a maximum of three hits on one side
before they must hit it over the net. Points are scored on every rally. Each game is to
25 points with the deciding, final game going to 15 points if teams are tied at two
games apiece in a five-game set.
Jokgu
Jokgu is a combination of tennis, soccer, and volleyball, and it’s a very popular sport
in South Korea. This version of volleyball has up to four players per side, but they can
only play the ball with their feet. Jokgu is played on a grass court, traditionally, but you
can play indoors and on a beach. The net is just a few feet off the ground, barely
higher than a tennis net. Players can let the ball bounce once before returning it over
the net with a powerful kick.
Newcomb Ball
This is a team sport that had its inspiration from volleyball but with much simplified
game play. The sport was invented in the United States in the late 19 th century by a
physical education instructor as a means to provide a simple game to her students
that can include any number of players. This is played in a rectangular court separated
by a rope at a fixed height that essentially acts as the net. The official ball used is
specially designed Newcomb ball. However, a volleyball can also be used to play.
The objective of the sport is to throw the ball as hard as possible on to the opponent’s
court such that the opponents are unable to catch the ball
Prisoner Ball
This is a variation of Newcomb ball. This is played much like the original dodgeball
game, except when a player is hit, he will be placed in “prison” behind the opposing
team. In order to get out of prison, the player needs to receive a pass from a teammate
while in the designated prison area.
Speak Takraw
This is a very popular game around Southeast Asia. This a foot volleyball game where
players touch as well as handle the ball using only their feet, knee, chest, and head.
The rules and regulations of the game are very much similar to that of volleyball.
Snowball Volleyball
This is a variant of beach volleyball which is played not on the sand but on snow.
Unlike the beach volleyball, which requires only two players inside the court from each
competing team, snowball volleyball has three players. In snowball volleyball, a team
is allowed up to three touches to return the ball across the net, and individual players
are not allowed to touch the ball twice consecutively.
Throwball
This is also a non-contact ball sport played across a net between two teams. Each
team will have nine players in the playing court. This game is popular in Asia,
especially on the Indian subcontinent and was first played in India. Throwball rules
were first drafted in 1955 and India’s first national level championship was played in
1980
Towel Volleyball
This is a game of volleyball using beach towels as a means of receiving the ball and
returning it to the opponent’s side of the court. This can be played indoors or outdoors.
If the game is outdoor, it is suggested that the game be held in a spot where one can
set up a water hose and sprinkler nearby to make the game more fun and exciting.
Wallyball
This is a variation of volleyball played in a racquetball court with a rubber ball. This
game is also known as ‘rebound volleyball’, a close relative of volleyball with many
rules, techniques, plays, and features that are the same with volleyball. However,
here, players may use the wall and ricochet the ball off the wall. In this regard, the
game becomes fast paced that requires a great level of fitness and hand/eye
coordination
9-man Volleyball
This is a volleyball team sport which consists of nine players per side and is being
played in a slightly larger court (10 meters by 20 meters). Historically, this was played
by the Chinese immigrants to the US, who predominantly came from the Taishan City
in China.
2. What game of volleyball you have enjoyed and really wants to learn? Why?

I have enjoyed the Beach Volleyball before while we are at the resort. Playing
beach volleyball is quite challenging because you’re movements are not that fast
because you are stepping into a sand. But I must say that it was fun because it
gives me an extra challenge while playing the game. Beach Volleyball is also
interesting because the environment you are playing is with a beach and it just
give me the sense of refreshment while I play. Overall, playing beach volleyball is
fun especially when you are playing with your family and friends.
The game of volleyball that I wanted to try is Footvolley because it is interesting to
see how volleyball and football are combined into one game. It is quite a challenge
because you are using different parts of the body to play the game. I would like to
see how it will turn out when I play that game. I think that this game will enhance
my muscle memory because your mind must be present while playing since you
are using your hand and foot at the same time. I want to try this because every
time the game gets challenging and intensely hard, it just gives me the drive to do
it.
3. What did you learn about the lessons?
I learned the different variations of volleyball. I appreciate how volleyball
transformed into so many games. It is just amazing to see how the game is
modified into something else without discounting the essence of the game. I was
amazed by how different sports were combined like the footvolley and jokgu. If
given the chance, I would like to try these games, because they are new to me,
since I am already playing the traditional volleyball game. I appreciate how they
created this game for the players to try something new and for them be challenged
as well. Overall, these variations gives a different flavor to the traditional volleyball
that we used to play. I really hope to see more improvements in the near future.
