MODULE 5 Part 2-Integral Calculus Updated With Additional Problems

1. The document discusses applications of integration in calculating moments of inertia for different geometric shapes. It provides formulas for moments of inertia about the x-axis and y-axis. 2. Several practice problems are worked out calculating the moments of inertia of areas and solids of revolution bounded by curves like parabolas, using integration techniques like shell method. 3. The problems involve setting up integrals of functions over the bounded areas and evaluating the integrals to find the moments of inertia about different axes.

Chapter V: Other Applications of Integration

Chapter Objective:

1.Applying integration in solving centroids of different systems

2. Applying integration in solving moment of inertia of different systems

Moments Of Inertia

The mathematical definition of moment of inertia is 𝐼 = ∫ 𝑟 2 𝑑𝐴 , indicates that an area is divided

into smaller parts such as dA and each area is multiplied by the square of its moment arm about the
reference axis.

Moment of Inertia about the x-axis

The moment of Inertia about the x-axis is the summation of the product of each area dA by the
square of its moment arm y. This gives

𝐼𝑥 = ∫ 𝑌𝑐 2 𝑑𝐴

Moment of Inertia about the y-axis

The moment of Inertia about the y-axis is the summation of the product of each area dA by the
square of its moment arm x. This gives

𝐼𝑦 = ∫ 𝑋𝑐 2 𝑑𝐴
