LESSON 8 – ART OF EMERGING EUROPE

Assessment:
1. Compare and contrast Greek and Roman artworks?
One of major difference between the two cultures is their approach towards art. The
Greek were more philosophical and idealistic, while the Romans were more realistic and
somehow extravagant in their approach to sculpture. Greeks showed great intellectualism in
their art.

2. Discuss how Mannerism art became an offshoot of works from the Renaissance.
As the Renaissance ended, artists stated directly copying subjects from existing works of
art. Most artworks during this period displayed distorted figures, two dimensional spaces,
discordant hues and colors and lack of defined focal point.

3. Explain why Neoclassicism served as a response or reaction to the Baroque period.

Neoclassical art is a severe and unemotional form of art harkening back to the grandeur
of ancient Greece and Rome. Its rigidity was a reaction to the overbred Rococo style and the
emotionally charged Baroque style.

Activity:
1. For me I pick Cupid, for a Roman Art Style. Cupid, is an ancient Roman God of love in all its
varieties, the counterpart of the Greek God Eros and the equivalent of Amor in Latin poetry. He
often appeared as a winged infant carrying a bow and a quiver of arrows whose wounds
inspired love or passion in his every victim.
