1. Purpose:
The purpose of this Work procedure is to lay guidelines and requirements and to establish a method or a system to control
the Backfilling activrty and inspection to be used in the LAYING OF 3 LPE COATED STEEL PIPELINE
IN BAILARI-GADAG, by MAS for executingthe Project-
2. Scope of Work:
This covers the backfilling of trench with the excavated./ borrowed earth soil after providing soft
padding of select backfilling as per requirements stated in alignment sheet & specification and
uft"r rlop" breaker where shown in drawings for LAYING OF 3 LPE COATED STEEL
PIPELINE, IN BALARI-GADAG.

5. Methodology:
Backfilling is to be commenced only after padding is done at least for 200mm covering above
the pipe. Backfilling shall not be done until the pipe and appurtenances have been properly
fitted and the pipe is according to the ditch profile at the required depth that will provide the
required and it does not rest upon any stone, hmd lumps etc., and has a bed which is

frei of extraneous material which allows the pipe to rest smoothiy and evenly. De-watering if
required should be carried out; in general trench should be dry prior to padding. The last 3 or
4 prpe lengths shall not be backfilled at both ends to facilitate tie-ins of the lowered sections'

Backfilling shall be done with prior approval of BGRL/TRACTEBEL. Before start of

backfilling MAS shaltr ensure the provision of anti-buoyancy meas\Ires.
The backfill material shall be soil, sand, clay or other containing no materials which could
damage the pipe and/or coating or leave voids in the backf,lled trench. Each completed layer
of backfrlling shall be carefully deposited, watered where necessary and thoroughly
consolidated to the satisfaction of BGRL/TRACTEBEL. The surplus material shall be neatly

Surplus material left from this operation shall be disposed off to the satisfaction of landowner
or authority having jurisdiction.

Where rock, gravel, are encountered at the time of trench excavation, sufficient earth, select
backfill materials (like soil, sand, clay or earth containing no gravel), shall be placed around
and over the pipe to form a protective cushion extending at least to a height of 200 mm all
around the pipe. Loose rock/stone of size not more than 150 firm may be retumed to the trench
after the required selected backflll material has been placed,
When the trench has been dug through driveways or roads, all backfilling shall be executed
with sand or suitable materials (shall be approved by BGRL/TRACTEBEL) in suitable layers,
which will be thoroughly compacted. Compaction tests shall be carried out to ensure proper
compaction and avoid future settlement. At the end of each day's work, MAS shall maintain
the backfrll against washouts etc., until the completion and final acceptance of the work by
BGRL/TRACTEBEL.
Back filling in steep areas where slope is lAYo ormore shall be provided with breakers. These '\-
breakers will consists of grout bags filled with 4:1 sand: Portland cement as per directions of
BGRL/TRACTEBEL.
MAS shall arrange to take levels as soon as the lowering activity is completed in presence
r BGRL/TRACTEBEL to allow survey the centre line of the pipe and the level of pipeline in
: : the trench prior to backfitling. MAS shall replace the top soil wherever applicable, which was
stored separately during trenching slope & soil stabilization to be carried out as per relevant
'- specif,rcation& at locations shown in alignment sheets or identified by BGRL/TRACTEBEL.
For U/G pipeline crossings & overhead power line crossings concrete slab 100mm Thickness
6r piastic grating 6mm thickness to be provided as per standard.
MAS shall make arrangements for measuring the deviations of the plpe centerline a.fter
backfilling. If it is more than 300 mm, it shall be brought to the notice of
BGRL/TRACTEBEL. For underground pipeline crossings and overhead power line crossings,
concrete slab/plastic grating to be provided as per Standard with prior approval.
Warning mat shall be anti rodenttype width 500 mm & thickness I mm. size shall be laid over the
HDPE conduit. HDPE conduit shall be backfilled with soft soil or sand like pipeline as table givd.-

Only trained rigging personnel to be deployed for this activity.
All Measuring & Test Equiprnents used must be well maintained.
All lifting devices & Tools used shall be well maintained and approved by a competent

Availability of First Aid Box willbe ensured at site during the work execution.
