Lesson 1 (Integers)
INTEGERS
Positive Integers
Negative Integers
𝐙 = {… , −𝟒 , −𝟑 , −𝟐 , −𝟏 , 𝟎 , 𝟏 , 𝟐 , 𝟑 , 𝟒 , … }

Example :
Freezing
Point
I II III
Solution :
I - The reading on the thermometer is 12℃ below zero . So the temperature of the ice cube
is −𝟏𝟐℃ .
II- The reading on the thermometer is 2℃ above freezing point . So the temperature of water
is +𝟐℃ .
III- The reading on the thermometer is 4℃ below freezing point . So the temperature
of fruit juice is −𝟒℃ .
If we compare these result on the thermometer we can easily see that the hotest is water
then fruit juice and the coldest is ice cube.

3) Which temperature is higher ?
a) −3℃ or − 9℃ −𝟑℃
b) 6℃ or 15℃ 𝟏𝟓℃
c) −3℃ or 0℃ 𝟎℃
d) 0℃ or 1℃ 𝟏℃
5) At midday of July the temperature was 30℃ . Five hours later it was 3℃ warmer. What was
the temperature then ?
Solution : 30℃ + 3℃ = 33℃
6) At midnight of December the temperature was 5℃ . Three hours later it was 2℃ colder.
What was the temperature then ?
Solution : 5℃ − 2℃ = 3℃

Absolute Value
❖ Absolute value describes the distance of a number on the number line from 0 without considering
which direction from zero the number lies. The absolute value of a number is never negative. The
symbol for absolute value is | | .
a) |+12| = 12
b) |−20| = 20
c) |0| = 0
EXERCISES 2
1) Use one of the symbols “< , > or = ” to compare the given pair of numbers.
2) Rearrange the numbers 16 , −5 , −45 , 27 , −42 , 0 , −54 in order of size, smallest first.
3) Rearrange the numbers −78 , +18 , 0 , −20 , −100 , 0 , +78 in order of size, largest first.
4) At 4 pm the temperature was 5℃ . By midnight it had fallen to −2℃. How much did it
fall?
