Background of The Study
Online learning is education that takes place virtually over the Internet. It is often
called as “e-learning”. This mode of education is one type of distance learning that takes
places across distance and not in a traditional classroom. There are other types of
distance learning today including: (a) correspondence courses which is conducted
through regular mail with little interaction; (b) telecourses where content is delivered via
radio or television broadcast; (c) CD-ROM courses where the student interacts with
static computer content; (d) online learning which is an internet-based courses are
offered synchronously and/or asynchronously; and (e) mobile learning by means of
devices such as cellular phones, PDAs and digital audio players.
According to The National Center for Education Statistics, as of 2020 there are
more than 6 million students currently in online courses as part of their higher
education program. 85% of those students think that online learning is the same or
better than the traditional classroom experience.
Why online learning and why now? Online learning meets the needs of the
population of students who cannot or prefer not to participate in traditional classroom
settings. For them, this mode of learning is as equal as the traditional way. Nowadays,
there are a lot of situations where a student may not be able to attend a class
personally.
