Each of the given sentences above uses aspect of verb. What is aspect of verb?
Aspect of a Verb
Is determined by whether the verb expresses a fact, an ongoing action, a
completed action, or the end of an ongoing action.
1. Simple aspect is the basic versions of past, present, and future tense verbs.
They describe either one event or all events of one action. It is the verb form used
to express a fact. This aspect is also known as indefinite aspect.
Simple past aspect tells you what the subject has already done. This is
used to describe something that happened in the past. Add –d or –ed to form
the past tense of the regular verbs. Change the spelling of irregular verbs
when using simple past aspect.
For example:
Ana listened to a song.
He walked to the store.
His father drove me home.
Simple present aspect tells you what the subject is doing right now, in the
present. The action is happening at the present time or habitually/regularly
done. Use the base form of the verb if the subject is plural. Use the singular
form of the verb if the subject is singular.
For example:
Ana listens to a song.
He walks to the store.
They walk to the store.
Simple future aspect tells you an action that will take place at some point,
but hasn’t happened yet. The helping verb will or shall are added before the
base form of the verb when using simple future aspect, and going to can
also be used.
For example:
He will walk to the store.
We shall arrive tomorrow morning.
I am going to buy a pair of shoes at the mall.
2. Progressive aspect discusses an ongoing, progressive, or unfinished action. The
action maybe progressing in the past tense, the present tense, or the future
tense.
Past progressive aspect describes an ongoing action in the past. Use the
past form of the linking verb was/were + progressive or the –ing form of
the verb.
For Example:
I was watching TV when dad came home.
The dogs were barking when we pass by at that house.
For Example:
Ana is listening to a song.
My brothers are fixing their bicycle.
For example:
The couple will be celebrating wedding anniversary after the
holiday.
Myra will be entering a prestigious school in college.
3. Perfect aspect describes finished action. It discusses a future action that will be
completed (or perfected).
Present perfect describes an event that has already been completed in the
present. It may also be used to describe events that took place in an
unspecified time in the past. Add has/have + past participle form of the
verb to form the present perfect.
For Example:
Luke has eaten pork steak for dinner.
They have left for Manila this morning.
Past perfect describe an event that occurred before a specific time in the
past. Use had + past participle form of the verb when writing the past
perfect.
For Example:
I had eaten my breakfast before mom came home.
Leo had played tennis before he was moved to soccer.
Future Perfect describes an action that will be completed by a specific time
in the future. Use will have + past participle form of the verb for future
perfect aspect. It doesn’t matter if the subject is singular or plural. The
formula does not change.
For Example:
I will have studied college at the nearest university from our
house.
I will have finished eating later at two o’clock.
4. Perfect progressive aspect describes an action that was in progress but was
then finished.
For example:
I had been playing basketball when I was in elementary.
For example:
Lina has been singing since she was five years old.
They have been visiting the house even they are no longer
staying there.
For example:
By that time she will have been working here for two years.
They will have been making pastries for ten years.
