EE 442 Homework #4: MT T T CT T

This document appears to be homework instructions for an electronics engineering course. It provides 6 problems related to amplitude modulation (AM) for students to complete. The problems cover topics like dual tone modulated AM signals, AM power efficiency, modulation index, AM modulators, double-sideband suppressed carrier modulation, and using a balanced modulator for DSB-SC modulation. Students are instructed to show their work, include plots or diagrams where specified, and print out the document to complete the problems for submission by a due date.

EE 442 Homework #4
(Spring 2020 – Due February 26, 2020 )
Print out homework and do work on the printed pages.

Problem 1 Dual Tone Modulated AM Signal (20 points)

Consider an AM signal with multi-tone modulation where the modulation

signal m(t) is given by

Homework 4
m(t )  4 cos(mt )  2sin(2mt ) ,
and the carrier c(t) is given by
c(t )  5cos(ct ), where c m .
Find an expression for AM(t), the spectrum of the AM modulated signal. In
addition, sketch the spectrum of the dual tone modulated signal.

Plot of the graph on page 2.

Problem 2 AM Power Efficiency (15 points)

An amplitude modulated signal is given by

 AM (t )  4  b  2 cos(mt )   cos(C t ), for m C .

Find the power efficiency of the AM signal for the two cases below:

(a) for b = 10 and (b) for b = 5.

2
Problem 3 AM Modulation Index & Power Efficiency (10 points)

The waveform shown below is a tone-modulated AM signal as might be

displayed on an oscilloscope. Both the carrier and the tone message are
sinusoidal waveforms. Find the modulation index  and power efficiency 
for this AM signal.

Problem 4 Switching AM Modulator (15 points)

In the figure below (page 150 in Agbo and Sadiku), the carrier signal
Accos(ct) has an amplitude of 20 volts and the diode turn-on voltage is 0.7
volt (assume this to be small compared to 20 volts). The message signal
has a DC component and is given by m(t) - , where  is a constant. In
addition, the message signal bandwidth is B Hz, and c >> 2B. Derive an
expression for y(t), the output signal of the AM modulator.

Problem 5 Double-Sideband Suppressed Carrier (20 points)

Consider double-sideband suppressed carrier (DSB-SC) modulation with a

carrier signal given by
AC cos(C t ), where C  10m .
Obtain both the time-domain expression and the frequency-domain
expression for the two modulating waveforms [(a) and (b) below] and
sketch the spectra for the two modulating signals.

and
(b ) m(t )  cos(mt )  cos 2 (mt )

5
Problem 6 DSB-SC Using a Balanced Modulator (20 points)

The figure below (i.e., Figure 3.38 in Agbo and Sadiku) is a double-
sideband with suppressed carrier (DSB-SC) balanced modulator.

Homework 4
Let
Ac  m(t ) and Ac Von ,
meaning that the diodes act as switches; Von is the diode forward turn-on
voltage. Assume both diodes are identical and that Rf, the series
resistance of each diode when forward biased, is negligible relative to the
external resistance R. The bandwidth of m(t) is m and C >> m. Derive
an expression for the output signal y(t).
