Innovative Plastic For Eco Car: Material Mania-2

Manufacturers are increasingly using plastics in automotive design and manufacturing due to regulations promoting more fuel-efficient and lightweight vehicles. 3D printing allows for innovative plastics with design flexibility and stiffness to be used. However, automakers cannot solely rely on bio-plastics due to challenges like materials degrading in light or by microorganisms, having relatively low strength, and requiring industrial-scale production processes.

MATERIAL MANIA- 2

INNOVATIVE PLASTIC FOR ECO CAR

The role of plastic in design and manufacturing of automotive vehicles has been more essential, with
stringent regulations and changing consumer habits driving demand for more affordable, lightweight and
fuel-efficient vehicles.

Some useful facts:

 Nowadays manufacturers are moving towards plastic because plastics are well suited for 3-D printing.
 Advantages:
1. Eco: Create less waste than traditional
manufacturing techniques that strip away
material from a larger piece.
2. It gives flexibility to produce more custom
designs.
 Drawbacks:
1. Costly
2. Not time efficient
 Innovative plastics with design flexibility and stiffness
 3D-woven technical textile
 Combination of aluminium and carbon fibres: iStream Superlight
 Combination of ABS plastic and carbon fibre-reinforced plastic: Olli
 Bio-plastics such as TPO; Bio-pet fibre for making Headlining, seat covers; wood cellulose (fibre) in interior
design, have marked in eco-friendly developments of cars.
 Tencel extracted from eucalyptus cellulose, is considered to be one of the most sustainable fibre of modern
technology.

Some challenges:
 It is not possible for automakers to use 100% bio-plastic because,
 Cars can be degraded by light or
microorganisms.
 Strength is comparatively low.
 Need of costly industrial processors and
composters.
 Some require high industrial-scale temperatures
to be broken down.
 Availability of equipment.
 Production of bio plastic will require the use of
cropland to provide natural-materials. With food
scarcity and hunger affecting 1 out of 5 families in the developed nations and much more in
developing countries, there is an ethical question whether it is right to expand this industry.
