ERAPAVE Example For FWD Back-Calculation

The document provides instructions for using ERAPAVE software to perform a forward backward calculation (FWD) to determine the modulus values of different layers in a pavement structure. It describes setting up the analysis by specifying the number of layers, material properties, loading information from FWD testing including axle load based on plate load, and calculation points. The results section describes selecting strain and displacement outputs to compare with measured deflection basin data from FWD testing to iteratively back-calculate the modulus values until a satisfactory agreement is obtained.

ERAPAVE example for

FWD back-calculation
Abubeker Ahmed
Number of layers
Material properties
Unknown values

Insert reasonable values value for unknown modulus value

Loading

Axle load = 2 * plate load, for example for 50 kN plate load axle load will be
100 kN, and for 30 kN plate load axle load will be 60 kN and so on.
Contact pressure is calculated from the plate load and plate radius, Load/Area
Calculation points and Analysis

Provide the locations of the sensors in cm, 0, 20, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120,
because sensors are placed on the surface z = 0, and y = 0
Then press RUN
Results

Select strains and displacements on the dropdown box on the left (shown in red).
The values on the last column (disp) are displacements in µm that you can copy
and plot in excel and compare with the measured deflection basin.
Iterations
If you are satisfied with the comparison from the last
step, then accept the modulus values otherwise vary
the modulus values until a satisfactory agreement is
obtained between the measured and calculated
deflection basins.
