Expressing Hope and Wish: Activity 1: Reading Comprehension
Expressing Hope and Wish: Activity 1: Reading Comprehension
Hope is a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. Wish is a desire or hope
for something to happen. Hope and wish are generally used to say our expectation on something
desired to happen in the future.
Hope is often confused with wish. Hope usually takes a present tense with a future meaning. For
example, I hope you win the contest. When we use hope, we usually don’t know or can’t tell the
result, whereas with wish we do know the facts and they are the opposite of what we want. For
example, I wish you could win the competition.
The following are expressions of hope and wish.
- I hope … - I expect … - Wish me luck
- Hopefully … - I am hoping - I wish ….
The responses are :
- Thank you - Thanks for your wish - Yes, I wish
- Thanks for your hope - Thanks, I hope so
