L.O.: Apply a page border

Add headers and footers
Control Page Layout
Add a Watermark
1
ADDING A PAGE BORDER IN MICROSOFT WORD
Open a Word document and click the “Design” tab in the ribbon.
From here, click the “Page Borders” button, in the “Page Background” section of the ribbon.

By default, the “Borders

and Shading” box that opens
should default to the “Page
Border” tab. If it doesn’t, click on
that tab to enter your border
settings.
Click “Box” to add a typical
box border to your document. You
can use the default style, color, and
border width, or change these
settings from the various drop-
down menus.
Click “OK” to apply the
page border to your Word
document.

Alternative Page Border Styles and

Formatting
The box page format is the default style, but
alternative border styles and formatting
options are available for you to use instead.
The box border is the most basic, adding a
solid line with no shadow to your page. Even
that can be customized with different types of
lines, widths, and colors.

2
Custom Page Border Settings and Styles
Other than the box border, you can also apply a border with a shadow, a “3D” style border, and a custom
border with mix-and-match options for each side.
To do that, select one of the options from the “Setting” section in the “Page Border” tab of the “Borders and
Shading” dialog box. Your chosen style will appear for you to review in the “Preview” section before you apply it to
your document.

Applying or Removing Individual Border Lines

If you want to apply or remove individual border lines from
your document (for instance, removing the border from the
bottom of a page), you can do this from the “Preview”
section.
If a border is applied, click on the border line to remove it.
To apply it again, click on the line to make it re-appear.

Applying Custom Border Lines

Clicking on individual border lines
in the “Preview” section is also how you
can apply different styles to different lines
when the “Custom” border setting is
selected.
To do this, click the “Custom” button in the
“Setting” column, select a line style from
the “Style” drop-down menu, and then
click on one of the border lines in the
“Preview” box.

3
Changing Border Width and Color
You can make your border stand out
with different colors and border widths. A
wider border width will make your border
stand out more in your document.
Border widths start from 1/4 pts and
go up to 6 pts. A preview of your chosen
border width appears in the “Preview”
section. You can select any color you choose,
either from the predefined options or by
using the RGB color chart.
To change the border width or color,
select your chosen options from the “Color”
and “Width” drop-down menus. If you have
the “Custom” border setting applied, you’ll
need to click on each border line in the
“Preview” section to apply your chosen
settings to those lines.

Adding a Border to a Single Page

Microsoft Word will usually apply
border styles to each page, but you can
apply a page border to an individual page or
exclude certain pages like your front page.
To do this, enter the “Page Border”
settings menu (Layout/Design/Page Layout
> Page Borders) and click the “Apply To”
drop-down menu.
If you want to apply a border to an
individual page, make sure you’re active on
that page in the Word document before
entering the menu.
From the “Apply To” drop-down
menu, select “This Section” to apply it to the
page you’re currently on. To apply your
border to the first page only, select “This Section – First Page Only” or, to apply it to all pages except the first page,
select “This Section – All Except First Page” instead.

Click “OK” to save when you’re ready. This will then apply your page border to the pages you’ve specified, rather
than to the entire document.

TO CREATE A HEADER OR FOOTER:
In our example, we want to display the author's name at the top of each page, so we'll place it in the header.
1. Double-click anywhere on the top or bottom margin of your document. In our example, we'll double-
click the top margin.

2. The header or footer will open, and a Design tab will appear on the right side of the Ribbon. The insertion
point will appear in the header or footer.

3. Type the desired information into the header or footer. In our example, we'll type the author's name
and the date.

4. When you're finished, click Close Header and Footer. Alternatively, you can press the Esc key.

5
5. The header or footer text will appear.

To insert a preset header or footer:

Word has a variety of preset headers and footers you can use to enhance your document's design and
layout. In our example, we'll add a preset header to our document.
1. Select the Insert tab, then click the Header or Footer command. In our example, we'll click
the Header command.

2. In the menu that appears,

select the desired preset
header or footer.

3. The header or footer will

appear. Many preset headers
and footers contain text
placeholders called Content
Control fields. These fields are
good for adding information
like the document title,
author's name, date, and page
number.

6
4. To edit a Content Control field, click it and type the desired information.

5. When you're finished, click Close Header and Footer. Alternatively, you can press the Esc key.

If you want to delete a Content Control field, right-click it and select Remove Content Control from the menu that
appears.

Editing headers and footers

After you close the header or footer, it will still be visible, but it will be locked. Simply double-click a header or
footer to unlock it, which will allow you to edit it.

7
Design tab options
When your document's header and footer are unlocked, the Design tab will appear on the right side of the Ribbon,
giving you various editing options:
 Hide the first-page header and footer: For some documents, you may not want the first page to show
the header and footer, like if you have a cover page and want to start the page numbering on the
second page. If you want to hide the first-page header and footer, check the box next to Different First
Page.

 Remove the header or footer: If you want to remove all information contained in the header, click
the Header command and select Remove Header from the menu that appears. Similarly, you can
remove a footer using the Footer command.

8
 Page Number: You can automatically number each page with the
Page Number command.

 Additional options: With the commands available in the

Insert group, you can add the date and time, document
info, pictures, and more to your header or footer.

PAGE LAYOUT
Word offers a variety of page layout and formatting options that affect how content appears on the page. You can
customize the page orientation, paper size, and page margins depending on how you want your document to
appear.
Page orientation
Word offers two page orientation options: landscape and portrait. Compare our example below to see how
orientation can affect the appearance and spacing of text and images.
 Landscape means the page is oriented horizontally.
 Portrait means the page is oriented vertically.
To change page orientation:
1. Select the Layout tab.
2. Click e Orientation
command in the Page
Setup group.

3. A drop-down menu will appear. Click either Portrait or Landscape to change the page orientation.

4. The page orientation of the document will be changed.

9
Page size
By default, the page size of a new document is 8.5 inches by 11 inches. Depending on your project, you may need
to adjust your document's page size. It's important to note that before modifying the default page size, you should
check to see which page sizes your printer can accommodate.

To change the page size:

Word has a variety of predefined page sizes to choose from.
1. Select the Layout tab, then click
the Size command.

2. A drop-down menu will appear. The

current page size is highlighted.
Click the
desired predefined page size.

3. The page size of the document will

be changed.

To use a custom page size:

Word also allows you to customize the page size in
the Page Setup dialog box.
1. From the Layout tab, click Size.
Select More Paper Sizes from the
drop-down menu.

2. The Page Setup dialog box will appear.

10
3. Adjust the values for Width and Height,
then click OK.

4. The page size of the document will be

changed.

Page margins
A margin is the space between the text and the edge of your document. By default, a new document's
margins are set to Normal, which means it has a one-inch space between the text and each edge. Depending on
your needs, Word allows you to change your document's margin size.

To format page margins:

Word has a variety of predefined margin sizes to choose from.
1. Select the Layout tab, then click the Margins command.

2. A drop-down menu will appear. Click the predefined

margin size you want.

3. The margins of the document will be changed.

To use custom margins:

Word also allows you to customize the size of your margins in the Page Setup dialog box.
1. From the Layout tab, click Margins. Select Custom Margins from the drop-down menu.

11
2. The Page Setup dialog box will appear.
3. Adjust the values for each margin, then click OK.

4. The margins of the document will be changed.

12
Alternatively, you can open the Page Setup dialog box by navigating to the Layout tab and clicking the
small arrow in the bottom-right corner of the Page Setup group.

You can use Word's convenient Set as Default feature to save all of the formatting changes you've made and
automatically apply them to new documents.

How to Use Watermarks in a Microsoft Word

Document
A watermark is a faded background image that displays behind the text in a document. You can use them to
indicate a document’s state (confidential, draft, etc.), add a subtle company logo, or even for a bit of artistic flair.
Here’s how to add and manipulate watermarks to your Word document.

How to Insert a Built-In Watermark

With your document open, switch over to the “Design” tab.

13
In the Page Background group on that tab, click the “Watermark” button.

On the drop-down menu, click any of the built-in watermarks to insert it into your document.

Word places the watermark behind the text.

14
How to Insert a Custom Watermark
You can also create custom watermarks from text or images. To do this, select the “Custom Watermark” from the
“Watermark” drop-down menu.

Using Custom Text Watermarks

In the Printed Watermark window that opens, select the “Text Watermark” option. Type the text you want to use
into the “Text” box and then configure the options for language, font, size, color, and orientation the way you want
them. Click “OK” when you’re done.

Word inserts your custom text watermark behind the text.

15
Using Custom Picture Watermarks
If you want to use a picture as a watermark, select the “Picture Watermark” option and then click the “Select
Picture” button.

You can use a picture file on your computer, search for an image on Bing, or select an image from your OneDrive
storage.

Select an image from the results and then click the “Insert” button. We’re using an image from our computer.

Back in the Printed Watermark window, you have a couple of options for how your picture appears. The “Scale” is
set to automatic by default, but you can change the size of your image if you want. The “Washout” option inserts

16
the image with pale colors the way most watermarks appear. You can disable that option to have the image
presented in its full glory. Click “OK” when you’ve set it up the way you want.

Word inserts the image behind the text in your document.

How to Move or Resize a Watermark

To move a watermark after inserting it, you’ll need to open the Header/Footer area in your document. Do so by
double-clicking anywhere in the header or footer area.
When you do that, the watermark becomes editable. This is true whether you’re using a text or picture watermark.
You can drag the image around to move it, or you can grab and drag any of its handles to resize it—just like you
would with any other image.

17
Since the same watermark appears on all pages, resizing or moving it on one page means those same changes are
made everywhere else.

How to Remove a Watermark

There are two ways to remove a watermark. The first is by opening the Header/Footer area, so the image is
accessible (the same way we talked about in the previous section), selecting the image, and hitting the Delete key.
You can also switch to the “Design” tab, click the “Watermark” button, and then select the “Remove Watermark”
command. Either way works just fine.

And just like with moving or resizing a watermark, deleting one removes it from every page of your document A.
