Who Am I?

Everyone of us has different personalities and assets that keep us distinct from

each other. Yes, we know some of our own personalities but it’s still fascinating when

you asked yourself with the question, “Who am I?”, who I really am? Do I just come into

existence and just go with the flow in life? Am I aware about my overall personal

identity? All that personal inquiries were answered and explained by great thinkers that

lead to the explorations of knowledge, reality and existence.

From my personal perspective, I’m a lady that sets high goals to achieve

satisfactory complement within me. I’m looking forward for my own modern house,

expensive cars and all finer things in life, I’m a dreamer who’s currently on the process

of achieving my standards. I know that I truly exist and I’m primarily aiming for

happiness in life. These ideas of mine are in accordance to Rene Descartes’ line, “I

think therefore I am”, Socrates’ statement, “Know Thyself” and his explanation to

the two dichotomous realms of self.

Rene Descartes’ “I think therefore I am” starts with the ability to doubt, it is

related to the line “I doubt therefore I am”, for this phrase emphasizes that we can’t

doubt the things we doubt about. Furthermore, when we doubt, it means that we’re

thinking. And when we’re thinking, it means that we exist. To sum it all up, I am aware

that I exist for I am thinking.

Next philosopher is Socrates, with the line, “Know Thyself”, it is important to

enhance my self-knowledge to know my weaknesses and strengths to know myself

more because I should know my personal identity first before I can achieve true

happiness in life. This is truly related to the question “Who am I?” because it reminds us

that we should know ourselves first more than anything in life.

As I’ve mentioned earlier about the dichotomous realms of self, there are two

realms which are the physical self which is changeable and imperfect and idea self

which is unchanging and eternal. I can say that I’m still living with the concept of the

physical self for I’m still aiming for material things in life and that made me aware that

I’m still on the process of knowing who I really am. As of now, I’m too far from the

concept of idea self-realm where a person seeks for true knowledge and wisdom

without the presence of temporal things in life.

Let me end this with Socrates’ statement, “An unexamined is not worth living”,

I know in myself that I’m still on the run to reach my complete self-knowledge but what’s

important is you’re aware and you’re not giving up on knowing who you really are. All

will fall into place at the right time for the entirety of self-knowledge leads to happiness

and fulfillment.
