Buy Less, Choose Well and Make It Last

Thankyou Toastmaster of the day. Good morning fellow toastmasters.

Do you recognize these fashion logos? We all enjoyed this company of
fast fashion but these company are not sustainable.
Today, I'm going to share with you fast fashion industry that
surprisingly have a big impact on our world.

Let's get started by talking about what is fast fashion.

Fast fashion means inexpensive clothing ~ produced rapidly by mass
market retailers in response to the latest trends.
For example, SHEIN is an international fast fashion e-commerce
platform that offering 700 until 1000 new styles every day.

Has anyone heard about the Sustainable Development Goals?

These are 17 Goals organized through the United Nations by 198 (one
hundred ninety-eight) countries to make the world more sustainable by
2030.
In my opinion, the fast fashion industry is falling short of these goals in
the specific areas of point number 12.
Which is Responsible Consumption and Production.

The first thing I will discuss is, the fast fashion industry is irresponsibly
using enviromentally harmful plastics … in their garment production.
I remember the first time I bought clothes from SHEIN. I can strongly
smell the odor of the fabric.
Their clothes are made with synthetic fabrics such as polyester and
nylon.
I realize now that it was a result of... the chemicals they were produced
with, … and this is a huge enviromental problem.
This synthetic fabric not only takes 30 to 200 years to decompose,
but also polluting our waterways and harming the mErine life.
Therefore, in social media, plenty of influencer reviews these
supercheap clothes.

The second reason is the fast fashion industry also irresponsibly

depends... on unsafe and unfair labor practices.
These companies, use offshore manufacturing so that the labor is
cheaper.
These countries pay their workers very low wages... unsafe work
conditions, and they are using cheap toxic chemicals that are bad for
our enviroment and worker health.
The fact that these workers are dependent on their jobs for survival,
making it easier for fashion company to exploit this VONERABLE
group.

Now that we have seen the problem, … we.... ~ as consumers are also
irresponsible for consuming these fashion products by buying our
fashion items from these companies
And... we should stop and buy from companies that have practice
responsible production.

What we should take away from this... is... we must ask ourselves if
we wish to continue the cycle until our world gains more and more
unnecessary textiles … or, ~ we can reflect on our shopping habits.

This is significant because if you need an affordable alternative to

fast fashion, … please consider swapping with your community, thrifting
in Chatuchak market, renting from the shop, even Do IT Yourself if you
are good at sewing or upcycling.

Most importantly, we can support the eco-friendly fashion brands too.

Otherwise,~ we can pressure the fast fashion industry to be more...
eco-friendly and... more... protective of their workers.

I’d like to leave you with this quote from the famous young actress
Emma Watson. She said, “As a costumer we have so much power to
change the world by just being careful in what we buy".
Have a great day everyone. Back at you toastmaster of the day
