W.D. Gann - Harmonic Analysis

This document discusses W.D. Gann's references to "harmonic analysis" in his writings and interviews, without clearly defining what he meant by the term. It raises questions about what Gann could have meant by harmonic analysis given that he does not mention Fourier analysis. It also questions where in his charts and writings Gann may have treated the subject of harmonics without using the word. Finally, it suggests that understanding how the ancients thought about harmonics could provide important insights, as Gann was deeply interested in ancient knowledge.

In the Ticker interview, W. D. Gann states, "I have found that in the stock itself exists its
harmonic or inharmonic relationship to the driving power or force behind it. The secret
of all its activity is therefore apparent."

He mentions "harmonic analysis" twice in his romance The Tunnel Thru the Air, in
terms that make it seem imperative that we understand what he is talking about.

And then, so far as I can recall and so far as my knowledge extends, he never utters the
word harmonic again.

We're led by this situation to ask ourselves:

1) What does Mr. Gann mean by harmonic analysis? Suppose his idea has nothing to do
with Fourier, which is the first thing that would leap into our minds and which maybe
we should discard just for that reason -- as being just a little too obvious a connection
given Mr. Gann's penchant for hiding things. What then? Is there any indication given
in the quote above?

2) Where in his writings and his charts does he treat the subject of harmonics, while
omitting any use of the word? Do we believe that he can have overlooked doing this? Or
have we overlooked seeing that he does this?

3) How did the ancients think about harmonics? This could be important to know. "He
made a fortune simply that he might have the leisure necessary for him to follow his
ambition – to study mathematics and delve into the knowledge held by the ancients. ...
his researches showed that the ancients had knowledge of natural laws of which we can
scarcely dream, that in a sense they were wiser than we are today." (The New York
Herald Magazine, Jan. 5, 1919; see "W. D. Gann on THE LAW OF VIBRATION," in the
files section)
