Techniques for Paraphrasing:

1. Make sure you understand the text that you are paraphrasing. If not, the paraphrase
will become strange:
Original Sentence The Alphonso Mango is the king of mangoes.

Strange paraphrase The Alphonso Mango is the head of state of mangoes.

Good paraphrase The Alphonso Mango is the best-tasting mango (Smith,


2019).

According to Smith (2019), the Alphonso Mango tastes better


than any other variety.

2. You can try changing the structure of the sentence.


According to Smith (2019), the tastiest variety of mango is the Alphonso.

3. Split the text into pieces. Each piece can be explained or simplified.

Schools, responding to increasing academic demands and keen to control behaviour, have cut down on playtime

1. According to The Guardian (2021), the amount of time that children have been given to play at
school has been reduced as a result of the increased demand for children to perform better
academically. Moreover, this has been done in an effort to minimise bad behaviour.

The blue bit has been explained (made longer).

2. Schools have reduced the amount of time that children have to play for both academic and
behavioural reasons (The Guardian, 2021).

The green bit has been simplified (made shorter).

4. Try changing the form of words.

Original sentence: Privatisation has failed on several counts.


Paraphrase: Smith (1999) explains that the failure of privatisation is due to many factors.

Original sentence: A flat above a shop is widely perceived as risky by investors.


Paraphrase: According to Smith (1999), investors generally regard a flat above a shop as a risk.
Paraphrase: Investing in a flat above a shop is generally considered to be a risk (Smith, 1999).
Paraphrase: Investment in a property above a shop is generally considered to be a risk (Smith,
1999).
Paraphrase: Smith (1999) explains that investors generally see a flat above a shop as highly risky.
