Annexure A: Courbon Method (Class A Loading)

The document describes the Courbon Method for calculating load distribution factors (DF) for bridge decks with two longitudinal girders. It provides assumptions for the method and shows a flow chart of calculations. As an example, it then gives input data for a sample bridge and shows calculations to find the neutral axis, second moment of inertia for each girder, and the final load reactions (Ri) and distribution factors for each girder.

ANNEXURE A

Courbon Method (Class A Loading)

Assumptions and Limitations

1 The ratio of span to width is greater than 2 but less than 4.
2 The cross girders extend to a depth of at least 0.75 of the depth of the longitudinal girder.
3 Applicable mainly to beam and slab type decks which are straight in plan.
4 The cross beams should preferably be cast monolithically with the longitudinals or should be cast at least before any other gravity loads comes on.
