Reflection

Topic: Netiquette, peer assessment, and feedback

1. Importance of Netiquette
Netiquette refers to a set of informal convection, norms, rules and responsibilities that guide how
people behave and interact online. It entails good behaviors in any online communication such as
social networking sites, emails and blogs. It provides social norms in the online environment. It
is as important as regular etiquette is; however, many people tend to ignore this aspect when
interacting online, and do not recognize havoc they cause.

Why netiquette online is importance

The use of netiquette makes communication clear and precise and ensures that respectful and
polite conversation occur online regardless of the cultural background just as they would occur in
physical interaction. It ensures there is smooth communication among online participants by
lessening misunderstanding, arguments, disrespect, or any type of misbehavior by a fellow
cyberspace participant. It ensures that we deal with each other with sensitivity and respect for
opinions and diversity. It also ensures that the internet world is safe to everyone. Besides, if it
followed, it leaves a good impression about the classroom. Whereby every individual become
comfortable to be a member.

Consequences of bad netiquette in the classroom

Hiding behind the internet can make individuals to gain confidence to say whatever they want
that is even in contrast to what they would say in the physical classroom where . In such a case, a
case, bad etiquette may occur that may create uncomfortable learning environment, insults, and
inappropriate attacks on someone.
How I feel and how others would feel if addressed with bad netiquette

Bad etiquette is likely to hurt the aggrieved and an online conflict may to occur that may
undermine teamwork, as an individual who feels disrespected is likely to retaliate or withdraw.
Furthermore, it could also lead to conflict as other members might decide to concur with the
aggrieved party, alienate the offensive individual, and these can lead to more
miscommunications and embarrassing situations (Conrad, 2002).

If it happens to me, I am likely to be upset but this could also depend on the person and the
circumstance, considering that we have different personalities and also come from different
cultural backgrounds. There are people I would better ignore and disengage than trying to waste
my time resolving the matter. At the end of the day, I am able to forgive since I do not hold
grudges. If it happens to another person, I am sure the same will hold, he or she will be hurt,
though people may react differently based on their personality and general mood of the day.

2. How netiquette relate to peer assessment

Netiquette involves the use of good manners, rules and behaviors in online interaction
such as social media, email, classrooms, and other correspondence. Peer assessment
refers to the process whereby students takes the responsibility of assessing or grading the
work of their peers based on the criteria set by their lecturer. While giving feedback about
peers work, it is important be courteous and give constructive feedback or respectful
criticism if you do not agree with their view. Before you post you submit your feedback,
review what you have written and interpret objectively. Ask yourself how you would
react if it were you and how you would perceive the feedback; the same applies to when
you are interacting online. In both cases, the communication should be clear and not
harsh. For example, do not use all caps, as it will appear as if you are shouting.

In both, the communication should not contain judgmental arguments. The aim is to help
each other and bad netiquette will counteract this.

Why it is important to use good manners when leaving feedback

Using good manner allows the other person to learn from the feedback as human tend to
be resistant to anything expressing negativity. In addition, if you use bad manners
instead, you will hurt the other party instead of helping them.

3. How I feel about the feedback:

a. I received- I am comfortable with them since the comments were insightful and
showed good etiquette. They commended me on what I had done well; while also
pointing out what I would have done better. W
b. I gave- I feel comfortable since they are honest opinion about what I felt the owners
could improve on and what I felt that they did well. I also followed the guideline by
the instructors. In addition, I took extra caution in terms of critique and reviewed my
feedback before submitting to enquire that to ensure that I expressed good
citizenship when conveying the feedback.
