predict a person’s physical dysfunction, illnesses, and life expectancy. In this future, eugenics
were taken to a next level since science and technology has the capability to manipulate the DNA
of a person. The character Anton was the product of the best qualities and character of his
parents, wherein, the capability of his mind and body is expected to achieve greatness. Vincent
the brother of Anton, who was conceived and born without his DNA being manipulated, was
leased favored by his dad because he is expected to be weak and die after 30.2 years. Not only
Vincent suffered prejudice and discrimination, the society in this film was ranked based on
personal capability, where humans aided with the technology is on the top of the hierarchy.
The film revolved around Vincent’s journey of making his lifelong dream become
possible despite the standards in the society and his low physical and mental capability. It was
made possible by impersonating a “valid” person with a suitable genetic advantage, named
Jerome Eugene Morrow. With Vincent’s determination and passion accompanied with Jerome’s
impressive genetics, Vincent quickly gained a high rank in the Gattaca Aerospace Corporation.
Despite Vincent making the impossible become possible the film still gives a depressing vibe. It
seems that the characters in this film are either sad because of the discrimination and prejudice or
serious because they are goal-oriented, given the fact that their genetics and capabilities was
expected to achieve greatness. Genetic advantage and genetic prejudice affected how the
characters in the film lived their life and because of the societal standards and rules, the majority
of the characters developed a toxic behavior and traits. For example, the head janitor succumbs
to the societal standards and did not support Vincent’s vision of being “on the other side,”
Jerome and Anton developed a narcissistic trait, where Anton refuses to believe that Vincent has
a better position on the hierarchy compare to him despite Vincent’s disadvantages while Jerome
did not accept failure and look down to those who are not on the same genetic level as him. The
evidence in this film suggests that eugenic technologies and rules negatively affect our rights and
the essence of our humanity. We would not enjoy a world that is heavily focused on work and
achievements, if such technologies exist in the real world, it would create a society that would
make prejudice a normal things and tons of dreams would be killed because of genetics
disadvantages.
As I finish the film, I realized that those technologies would cause the fall of humanity
because what for is the advancement in our civilization and science if the society is gloomy and
sad. A child’s life is already determined after birth, if the results were negative, the child would
live in a shameful and discriminated life. The chances of people being their full potential and
future aid to the society would be killed right from the start. Ludwig Van Beethoven and Sir
Isaac Newton would not be able to help improve our world in different fields if such standards
exist because they themselves would be part of those who are genetically discriminated. People
strengths should not be based only on genetics because a person who is determined can achieve
anything if it puts its mind towards it. Eugenics should focus on preventing people from gaining
diseases not genetically building a child or cloning because science should help people live
comfortably not decide a person’s future life. We should not forget the sacrality of a human life
and do not go beyond it.
