Objectives:
A. Content Standards
Demonstrates understanding of key concepts of variations and radicals.
B. Performance Standards
The learner is able to formulate and solve accurately problems involving radicals.
C. Learning Competency/Objective
The learner solves equations involving radical expression.
(M9AL-Iii-1)
II. Content
Topic: Solving Radical Equation
Reference: Mathematics Learners Material 9 pp.276-285
Materials: Chart, marker, chalkboard
III. Procedure
A. Review
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Recall:
The teacher ask the students if who can recall the previous topic.
The teacher call some students to answer the given examples on the board.
B. Motivation
“Find Me”
In this game, the teacher will divide the class into three. Each group will be given
cross-word puzzle to find three words which might related to the new topic. Whose
group finishes first will be the winner and have a corresponding points.
C. Lesson Proper
1. For starter, the teacher will present some equations, then the students will state
whether the given is a radical equation or not.
1. √ + 5 =11
2. √ − 4 = 7
3. √5+ = 11
4. 4√ − 7 + 12 = 28
5. =√27
2. Facilitate on differentiating radical and non-radical equation.
3. Activity: “Solve Me” In this activity, the class will remain with their group. Each
group will be given a task (equation) to answer. Let the students analyze.
(Each group of the students will be the leader, Secretary, and a presenter)
4. Analysis: Based on previous activity, each group will present their work.
Ask the students some questions:
How did find the activity?
What part from your solution was difficult to answer?
What steps did you used to answer?
5. Abstraction: The teacher will present the steps in solving the radical equation.
1. Isolate the radicals by applying the appropriate properties of equality.
2. Remove the radical sign by raising both sides of the equation to the index
of the radical
3. Combined similar terms when possible
4. Solve the resulting equation.
5. Check the solutions for a possible presence of extraneous roots.
(The teacher will present some examples in solving radical equation)
6. Application: “The Reasons Behind My Back”
In this activity, teacher will call some volunteers to answer on the board.
Solve the radical equations. Writhe your and the property, definition, or theorem
that you used in your solution.
2. √ -3= 5
3. + 4 = √ + 10
7. Evaluation:
Solve the following radical equation.
1. 3 √ + 1 = 2
2. √ − 2 = 10
3. √ = 8,where x >0
4. −3√ + 2 = x-6
5. 4√ − 2 = x
8. Assignment/agreement:
Answer the given problem.
1. A woman bikes 5 kilometers to the east going to school and then walks 9
kilometers northward going to the church. How far is she from the starting
point which is her house?
2. A certain number is the same as the cube root of 16 times the number. What is
the number?
