A CRITIQUE ON THE CASE STUDY ENTITLED

“An Assessment of Students’ Performance in Communication Skills A Case

Study of the University of Education Winneba”

INTRODUCTION

The title is brief and instructive, which is very helpful because it gives the

entire study’s viewpoints. It is very relevant and timely for we rely significantly on

exchanging information in today's frantic world, therefore having effective

communication skills is more important than ever. In order to deliver and understand

information quickly and accurately, good verbal and writing communication skills are

required. Effective communication is an important life skill that should not be

disregarded and this study shows how significant it is to emphasize the deficiency in

the program of most higher institutions in Ghana, notably the University Of

Education, Winneba, that offers Communication Skills as a general course. Regarding

the discussion of the Communication Skills course itself inside the institutions, it

would be far better if the report went into further detail about the program's function

and significance to provide students with the knowledge or ability to employ the

necessary skills.

The problem is clearly stated in the study. Many people have complained in

recent years that the standard of English in Ghana is deteriorating at all levels of

education, resulting in the poor performance and competence of the students. This is
evident according to Yemeh (2007), revealed from a study of first-year students’

writings based on class assignments and end of semester examinations that the

majority of first-year university students enrolled in the Communication Skills course

are unable to communicate effectively in writing. The problem specifications

requirements underline which problem should be addressed. The purpose and goals of

the study are expressed plainly. Research into the teaching of communication skills in

tertiary institutions seeks to assess factors that influence or affect students'

performance and to come up with suggestions and recommendations for how to

improve communication skills teaching and learning. The research questions directly

address the study's aims.

BODY

The associated literature and history is extremely important since it contributes

to and demonstrates the needs why this study is necessary to be conducted. Some

studies emphasize that communication skills are the foundation of language learning

from which effective speaking, writing and reading emerge. 90% of students would

rather choose to watch movies rather than read books related to their respective

courses. This shows how reading as an attitude has suffered over the past three years.

The Communication Skills course includes both oral and written skills. Gogovi,

Gborsong, Yankah and Essel (2006) agree that the study of communication skills

would be useful to students by enhancing their academic performance and help in the

job market. In history, Communication Skills were first started in the country by the

University of Ghana and then University of Cape Coast. Kwame Nkrumah University
of Science and Technology (KNUST) also introduced it. The course is taken for a

semester in Winneba and two semesters in Cape Coast, but for two years in the case

of KNUST. The importance of Communication Skills, that it can not be over

emphasized. The study of communication skills would be useful to students by

enhancing their academic performance. It would also be of immense help in the job

market, according to Dr. Gogovi Yankah-Gborsong and Essel. They also discuss

students' performance in the Communication Skills course is influenced by a variety

of factors.

There are factors revealed by the literature review for this study which is a good thing

in order to learn more about the factors affecting students' success in the

Communication Skills course, including the availability of the textbooks and students’

proficiency in Language, but they don’t only focus on this wide range of topics but

under The new words that were stated were fully defined.

The ethics of the study related to the standard proceedings considering the

range of the study in conducting and revealing some results of the studies are

explained very well. The study was carried out by the University of Education,

Winneba (Winneba campus). The total population targeted for the study was two

hundred undergraduates. The sample was selected from ten departments and every

department was represented by three people. This was possible because the

researchers wanted to have fair representation from all departments chosen. The study

systematically explained the gathered data. Interviews and observation were used as

data collection strategies. Documents were analysed to know what students'

performances really are. The study appeared in the British Journal of Social Science,
which was released on Thursday. The data acquired from the interviews, documents,

and observations conducted in this study was analyzed using Miles & Huberman's

(1999) three-step approach.

CONCLUSION

The researchers employed basic and straightforward language to communicate

effectively. However, to avoid misunderstandings about the matter, they must reduce

and be careful with their tone of voice. It has a very active voice, which makes it more

obvious, accessible, and entertaining for the readers. The conclusions of the study are

extremely important now, because tremendous steps must be taken in order to develop

students who are globally competitive and have excellent communication skills. The

researchers also include the qualities that Lecturers, Students, and Administrative/

Institutional roles must possess, as this is very helpful in changing the method, strategies,

and people involved in this to see beyond what is impeding progress and to consistently

achieve the program's main goal. However, it would be preferable if there were some

explicit recommendations regarding the curriculum's approach to students. Overall, it has

indeed a very meaningful and significant impact on future generations, because

communication skills are the most crucial factor that students should consider in order to

succeed in all aspects of their lives.
