Multiplying by 5; Combining Five Repeated Sets

 Putting together the objects in five repeated sets is the same as

multiplying 5 and the number of objects in each sets.
 Multiplying numbers in fact of 5 is just like skip counting by 5s.
Let us read and answer the given example below.

Daphne has five garden plots with three seedlings planted

on each plot. How many seedlings does Daphne have on his five
plots?
Asian Development Foundation College
Tacloban City

How many plots are there in all? _____

How many seedlings are planted on each plot? _____
How many seedlings are there in all? _____

This is the addition sentence.

3 seedlings + 3 seedlings + 3 seedlings + 3 seedlings

+ 3 seedlings = 15 seedlings

3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15

This is the multiplication equation.

5 x 3 seedlings = 15 seedlings
5 x 3 = 15

There are 15 seedlings in all.

We got the same answer using either 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 15
or 5 x 3 = 15 .

Let us read and answer the given example below.
Ten pupils are served with snack that costs P50. How
much are they going to spend for their food altogether?
Asian Development Foundation College
Tacloban City

1. How many pupils are taking their snack? ______

2. How much is the cost of each snack? ______

This is the addition equation.

P50 + P50 + P50 + P50 + P50 + P50 +

P50 + P50 + P50 +P50 = P500

50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 +
50 + 50 = 500
This is the multiplication sentence.

10 x P50 = P500
10 x 50 = 500
The pupils are going to pay P500 in all.
