Overview :

● Specifications
● Microstrip Patch antenna
● Coplanar waveguide fed mechanism
● Circular polarization
● Design and Implementation of Asymmetric CPW fed
Square Slot antenna.

2
Specifications :

● Frequency range : 3 to 10 GHz (UWB)

● Microstrip patch antenna
● Circular polarization
● Asymmetric CPW fed

3
Microstrip Patch antenna

● Also known as “Printed antennas”

● Consists of a radiating patch on
one side of a dielectric substrate,
ground plane on the other side
● Easy to fabricate and comfortable
on curved surfaces.
● They come in variety of shapes :
square, rectangular, triangle etc
4
Method of Analysis

1. Transmission Line Model

● It represents microstrip antenna by

2 slots seperated by low impedance
line of length L.
● The fields at the edges undergo
fringing.
● Fringing fields are responsible for
radiation
5
2. Cavity Model

● Microstrip antenna
resembles dielectric loaded
cavities.
● The top & bottom of the
cavity are perfectly
electrically conducting.
● 4 side walls are modelled as
perfectly conducting
magnetic walls
6
Why Microstrip Antenna ?

● Supports Ultra-Wide Band Property

● Single Metallic Layer leading to easy integration
● High Circular Polarisation(CP) Bandwidth
● Asymmetric CPW fed
● Low weight and low volume
● Low fabrication cost
● Low profile planar configuration
7
● Supports both, linear as well as circular polarization
● Can be easily integrated with microwave integrated circuits
(MICs)
● Capable of dual and triple frequency operations
● Mechanically robust when mounted on rigid surfaces

8
Coplanar waveguide fed mechanism (CPW) :
● CPW is an electrical transmission line fabricated on PCB used to
convey microwave frequency signals
● Signal & ground currents are etched on the same layer
● EM energy is concentrated within the dielectric

9
Advantages of CPW fed :

● Low dispersion
● Simple realisation due to etching on one side
● Easy Integration
● Broadband performance

10
Circular Polarization Antenna

● Antennas produce circularly polarized waves when two

orthogonal field component of equal amplitude but in phase
quadrature are radiated.
● Rotates in a corkscrew pattern
● Wave radiates energy in the horizontal, vertical planes as well
as every plane in between
● EM wave does not change strength, but rotates around central
axis
11
Applications

● Used in mobile communication

● Used in amateur radio
● Used in military work
● Used in GPS system

12
Types of circular polarization
● Right-hand-circular (RHCP) -

If the rotation is clockwise looking in the direction of propagation

● Left-hand-circular (LHCP) -

If the rotation is counterclockwise looking in the direction of propagation

13
Axial Ratio

Circular polarization AR = 1 ( 0dB)

Elliptical polarization 1< AR<oo

Linear polarization AR = oo

Axial Ratio Bandwidth is Frequency range over which AR < 3 dB
