2. What is the 10th term of the Arithmetic Sequence 7, 15, 23, 31, 39, ...?

3. Find the next two terms of the Arithmetic Sequence -2, -5, -8, -11, ...

What Is It
How did you find the activity above? Did you get it all correctly? What
if you are asked to determine the 100th term of an Arithmetic Sequence? Can
you determine it easily? I believe your answer is no. To help you find it
easier, the term of an Arithmetic Sequence, an = a1 + (n-1) d , where
an = term, a1 =first term, n= number of terms d=common difference will be
used.

Example 1.Find the 100th term of the arithmetic sequence -2, -5, -8, 11....

SOLUTION:

STEPS FIGURE/EXPRESSION/ DISCUSSION

1 a1 = -2 , n = 100,  Identify what are given and

what is to be determined.
d= -3
an= 100th term
 The 100th term is to be
determined.

2 an= a1+ (n-1)d

 The formula in finding the
of an arithmetic sequence.

100th term = -2 + (100-1) (-3)  Substitute what are given to

The formula.
2
3 100th term = -2 + (100-1)(-3)
 Solve what is inside the
= -2 + (99) (-3)
parenthesis, 100-1=99.

4 100th term = -2 + (99) (-3)

100th term = -2 + (-297)  99 times -3 is -297.

5 100th term = -2 + (-297)

 Add -2 and -297,the result is
-299.
Remember : Addition of Integers
100th term = -299

The Arithmetic Means of an

Lesson Arithmetic Sequence
2
What I Need to Know
12
Welcome!
In this lesson, you are going to learn how to determine the arithmetic means
of an arithmetic sequence. (M10AL-1b-1)

Are you ready to EXPLORE and LEARN?

Be ready with your Math activity notebook, scratch papers, pen/pencil
and calculators.

What’s In
What do you think of this next lesson? Do you think this is more
challenging than the previous one?

Think of this: What if you are asked to solve for the term/s of an
arithmetic sequence given only the first and last term?
Example: Find the term between 21 and 153.

Can you easily solve for the term? How about the common difference?
Before you will know how, try answering the activity below

13
What’s New
Find the missing term in each of the arithmetic sequence..

1. 5, ___, 15, ___ , 25 4. 49, 42, ___, 28

2. -1, -5, ___ , ____, -17 5. -1,____ , ____ , -4, -5

3. 15,____ , 27, 33

How did you find the activity above? I am pretty sure you did not find it
difficult because you are already taug ht in the previous lessons how the
terms in an arithmetic sequence is identified through its common difference.
Am I right?

The missing terms above are what we called Arithmetic Means.

Arithmetic Means refer to the terms between any two non-consecutive

terms of an arithmetic sequence.

What Is It
In solving for the arithmetic means of an arithmetic sequence given

only the 1st and last terms, the common difference is d= , where

an= last term, a1 = first term, and n = number of terms.

Example 1. Insert an arithmetic mean between 5 and 11.

SOLUTION:

STEPS FIGURE/EXPRESSION/ DISCUSSION

EQUATION
a1 = 5 , an= a3 =11  Identify the given.
1
n=3  n=3 since only one term has
to be inserted between 5 and 11.
Thus, the sequence has three
terms.
a2= ?  Identify the unknown. The
unknown is the 2nd term or a2 .

14
2 d=  The formula to be used in
solving for the common difference,
d.
 Substitute the given to the
d=
formula.
d=  Simplify the numerator, 11-
5=6, and the denominator, 3-1=2.
 Divide 6 by 2, the result is
d= 3 3.
 Therefore, the common
d=3 difference is 3.

3 a1 + 3 = 5 + 3 =8  To get the next term of the

sequence, add the common
a2 = 8
difference 3 to the preceding term.
 Thus, the arithmetic mean
5, 8, 11 between 5 and 11 is 8.

Example 2. Insert two arithmetic means between -15 and -45.

SOLUTION:

STEPS FIGURE/ DISCUSSION

EXPRESSION/EQUATION
1 a1= -15, an= a4 = -45  Identify the given.

n=4  n=4 since two terms are to

be inserted between 5 and 11.
Thus, the sequence has four
terms.
a2 =?  Thus, the unknown terms
a3= ? are a2 and a3.
2
d=  The formula to be used in
solving for the common difference,
d.
 Substitute the given to the
d=
formula.
 Simplify -45-(-15) =
-45 + 15
 Simplify -45 + 15 = -30
d=

 Divide -30 by 3 equals -10.

15
 Therefore, the common
d= difference is -10.

d= -10
4
a1= -15 + -10 = -25  To get the next term of the
sequence, add the common
a2 = -25 + -10 = -35
difference -10 to the preceding
a3 = -35 term.
 Thus, the two arithmetic
-15, -25, -35, -45 means between -15 and -45 are
-25 and -35.

Example 3. If four arithmetic means are to be inserted between -7 and

33, what is the second arithmetic mean?
SOLUTION:

STEPS FIGURE/ DISCUSSION

EXPRESSION/EQUATION
1 a1= -7 , an= 33 ,  Identify the given.

n=6  n=6 since there are four

arithmetic means to be inserted
plus, the first and the last terms.
 a3 is the term to be
a3= ?
identified since the second
arithmetic mean is the third
arithmetic term of the sequence.

2 d=  The formula to be used in

solving for the common difference,
d.
 Substitute the given to the
d=
formula.
d=  Simplify the numerator, 33-
(-7)=40 and the denominator,
6-1=5.
d= 8  Divide 40 by 5, the answer
is 8.
d= 8  The common difference is 8.

16
3 a1= -7 + 8 = 1,  To get the next term, add
the common difference 8 to the
a2=1 + 8 = 9
preceding term.
a3= 9
 Therefore, a3 is 9.
 Thus, the second
-7, 1, 9, 17, 25, 33
arithmetic mean is 9.

 Another way to solve a3 is

4 an= a1+ (n-1) d
to use the formula for the term
of an arithmetic sequence,
an= a1 + (n-1) d.
a3 = -7 + (3-1) 8  Substitute the given to the
a3= -7 + (2) 8 formula and simplify.
a3 = -7 + 16
a3 = 9  Therefore, a3 is 9.

Example 4. What is n if d= -5, the 1st term is -15, and the last term is
-105?

SOLUTION:

STEPS FIGURE/EXPRESSION DISCUSSION

EQUATION
1 a1= -15 , an= -105  Identify the given and what
d= -5 , is unknown.

n=?  The unknown is n.

2
an= a1+ (n-1) d
 Use the formula for the
term of an arithmetic sequence.
-105 = -15 + (n-1) (-5)  Substitute the given to the
formula.
 Simplify the equation.
-105 = -15 + (-5)n –(-5)1
-105 = -15 -5n + 5
-105 = -5n -15 +5  This implies that there are
-105 = -5n -10
19 terms in the arithmetic
5n = 105 -10
5n = 95 sequence given.
5 5
n = 19

What I Can Do
Are you having fun? How about trying this at home? You will be
smiling and hopeful as you answer this because “The bigger, the merrier”.
What do I mean? You will find it out!

20
Your mother made a budget for your daily load allowance. She said,
for the first week starting August 24, Php10.00 will be given to you daily. She
promised to increase it each week, thereafter, if you will have a very good
performance in your studies. How much is the increase if on the fourth week
you received Php25.00 for your daily load allowance?

Assessment
Are you yet hopeful? Receiving a bigger allowance every day is
inspirational indeed. Don’t you think?
This part here will test how very good you have been with this lesson.
Make the best to be rewarded!

Summary
This module has taught you the following lessons:

 From Lesson 1 – The term of an Arithmetic Sequence

 In determining the term of an arithmetic sequence,

use an= a1 + (n-1) d where an= term, a1= first term,

n = number of terms, and d = common difference.

 To get the common difference, subtract the first term from the
second term of the sequence.

 From Lesson 2 – The Arithmetic Means of an Arithmetic

Sequence

 Arithmetic Means refer to the terms between any two non-

consecutive terms of an arithmetic sequence.

22
 In determining the arithmetic mean/s of an arithmetic sequence
given the first and the last terms, solve first the common

difference using this formula d= , where an= last term,

a1 = first term, and n = number of terms. Then add the common

difference to the preceding term to get the next term.
