Condenser Design

This document shows how to use Thermo Utilities software to design a condenser. It provides data on 15,000 kg/h of wet steam at 37C with 95% quality entering the condenser. Cooling water at 7C and 1.2 bar enters and exits at 22C and 1.013 bar. The software calculates the cooling water flow rate and condenser tube surface area needed using a heat transfer coefficient method from BEAMA standards, and provides the coefficient and other outputs. It also calculates using the less conservative HEI standard method. The document includes contact information for the software developer Taftan Data.

Condenser Design

This document shows how Thermo Utilities, MS Excel Add-ins can be

used for condenser design.
A surface condenser is required to deal with 15 000 kg/h wet steam.
Wet steam temperature is 37 C and enters the condenser with 0.95
quality (dryness fraction is 0.95). The water used for cooling has the
following data:
-inlet pressure 1.20 bar, inlet temperature 7 C
-outlet pressure 1.013 bar, outlet temperature 22 C
Calculate the flow rate of cooling water and tube surface of the
condenser. Assume that the cooling water velocity through tubes is
1.5 m/s

Inputs Units Error ?

Wet steam inlet temperature 37 Err:511
Steam quality 0.95
Cooling water inlet temperature 7 Err:511
Cooling water inlet pressure 1.2 Err:511
Cooling water outlet temperature 22 Err:511
Cooling water outlet pressure 1.013 Err:511
Steam mass flow 15000 kg/h
Cooling water speed 1.5 m/s

Wet steam pressure Err:511 Err:511 Err:511
Enthalpy of steam at inlet Err:511 Err:511 Err:511

The overall heat tranfer coefficient can be calculated according to BEAMA or HEI standards.

HEI : Heat Exchanger Institute
