Dual Converters - Applications of Dual Converters For Speed

Here are the steps to solve this problem: 1. Motoring at 100 rpm, rated torque: - Back EMF (Eb) = (RPM/120) * VLL * Poles = (100/120) * 220 * 2 = 92 V - Converter output voltage (Va) required = Eb + Ia * Ra = 92 + 50 * 0.5 = 142 V - Va/Vac = sin(α) - 142/165 = sin(α) - α = sin-1(142/165) = 53° 2. Braking at 1000 rpm, rated torque: - Eb = (1000/120) * 220 * 2 = 7

Dual • two fully controlled rectifiers connected

antiparallel across the armature

Converters-
• Up to 10kW power rating, 1phase fully
Applications of controlled rectifiers are used, higher
Dual ratings 3phase fully controlled rectifiers
Converters for are used
speed control • Rectifier 1 : +ve motor current and
of DC motors voltage in either directions
• Rectifier 2: -ve motor current and voltage
in either directions
• Circulating current type
• Non circulating current type
Circulating current type • Both converters are controlled
together
Dual Converters • two converters are connected
in anti parallel through reactors
• Output voltage of Converter A
and B are VA and VB
• Average voltage can be same
but instantaneous values of VA
and VB are different and
generate circulating current
between converters
• to minimize ic reactors L1 and
L2 used
• Quadrant of operation
• Conv 1: Quadrant 1 and 4
• Conv 2: Quadrant 3 and 2
Circulating current type
Circulating current type Dual Converters-
speed reversal
• quadrant 1: Conv A as rectifier
0 ≤ 𝛼𝐴 ≤ 90 and Conv B as
inverter 90 ≤ 𝛼𝐵 180.
• to reverse speed, 𝛼𝐴 𝑖𝑠 𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑒𝑑
𝛼𝐵 decreased. Back emf exceeds VA
and VB . Armature current shift
from Conv-A to Conv-B and motor
operates in quadrant 2. And 𝛼𝐵 is
controlled continuously to break
the motor at max allowable current
from initial speed to zero speed and
accelerate to desired speed in
reverse direction
Non-Circulating current type Dual • One rectifier is controlled at a time

Converters • no circulating current

• discontinuous conduction occur at light
loads
• Speed Reversal: quadrant 1 conv-A as
rectifier and conv-B not operated. To
reverse speed , firing angle of conv-A is
set high and it will operate as inverter
and forces armature current to zero.
Then a dead time 2-10microsec provided
to turn off all SCRS and conv-A firing
pulses are withdrawn and given to Conv-
B. and firing angle of B is set high. And
𝛼𝐵 is controlled continuously to break
the motor at max allowable current from
initial speed to zero speed and accelerate
to desired speed in reverse direction
Dual converter -
• field is supplied by dual converter . Armature a separate
Field current rectifier is provided to suplly
Reversal • field current in one direction motor operates in Quad 1 and 4
• field is reversed to operate the motor in Quad 3 and 2
• dual converter operates in non-simultaneous control ( non-
circulating mode)
• to reverse speed : armature current is brought zero by
setting armature rectifier firing angle high. And field rectifier
firing angle is set high , to operate it as inverter and force
field current to zero. . After suitable dead time , second
rectifier is activated at lowest firing angle. When field current
has settled and motor back emf was reversed the armature
rectifier firing is set high. The current control will adjust
firing angle continuously to to break the motor and accelerate
to desired speed in reverse direction
Problem 02
A 220V, 1500rpm,50 A separately excited dc motor with armature resistance of
0.5ohm is fed from a circulating current dual converter with ac source voltage 165V.
Determine the converter firing angle for the following operating points.
1. motoring operation at rated motor torque and 100rpm
2. braking operation at rated motor torque and 1000 rpm
3. motoring operation at rated motor torque and -1000rpm
4. braking operation at rated motor torque and -1000rpm.
