Service Bulletin Trucks: SRS, Airbag

This service bulletin provides instructions for working on the supplemental restraint system (SRS) or airbag system on Volvo trucks. It describes the major components of the SRS, including the steering wheel, airbag module, and contact reel. Procedures are outlined for fault tracing, replacing components, and checking fault codes. Special equipment and tools such as a diagnostic tool and adapter are also described that are required to interface with the SRS. Safety precautions are emphasized, as working on an active SRS risks accidental airbag deployment.

SRS (Supplemental Restraint System)

D
T8006840

This service manual describes the design and function of the SRS airbag that Volvo
vehicles are equipped with. The service manual contains a description of the various
airbag components as well as of the relevant fault codes and how to use them.

The service manual covers fault tracing procedures and instructions for repair and
replacement of the steering wheel, airbag module and contact reel. At the end of the
service manual there is a table containing function check procedures and a wiring
diagram. There is also a list of operation numbers.

Note: The service manual is compiled for use in Volvo service workshops and other
authorised workshops with trained, qualified personnel. The procedures for service and
fault tracing are compiled for use by qualified personnel only. They are not intended
for use by unqualified personnel. Volvo is not responsible for any possible accidents,
material damage or injury that may be caused by failure to follow the service procedures
or by work carried out by unqualified personnel.

Ignition pulses, SRS (AC)

The ignition pulses that the control unit sends to the
detonator in the airbag module when the system is
activated are AC signals (alternating current) that are
sent to the SRS. A condenser in the connection allows
these pulsed signals to pass but blocks DC signals (direct
current).
This means that a airbag module which is connected to
the SRS cannot be activated accidentally by a DC source
being connected during fault tracing.

Warnings with regard to measurement instruments T8006857

are still applicable, as are warnings against direct

measurements on a disconnected airbag module.

Important instructions for fault tracing/repair

D
SRS fault codes, bear the following in mind
When a code is stored (which cannot be removed) the SRS airbag may be out of function.

• All stored codes must be read off at least once before they can be removed.

When all the faults have been rectified, only code 1-1-1 will be shown.

If fault code 1-1-2 is shown, it cannot be removed. Instead the control unit must be sent to Volvo in accordance
with the relevant work procedure.

During fault tracing, bear the following in mind

• Follow the work procedure closely. Do not omit any steps before the cause of the fault has been identified. The
airbag module can be activated if the work procedure is not followed.

• The starter key must always be in the Off position and the negative battery cable removed before fault tracing is begun.

• Never use an ohmmeter or other voltage carrying measuring instrument for measuring the resistance of the airbag
module.

• Never take readings directly on the airbag module.

During repair work, bear the following in mind

• Follow the work procedure closely. Never omit a step.

• The starter key must always be in the Off position and the negative battery cable removed before repair work
or replacement of a component is begun.

• The battery must be disconnected when an airbag module, an ignition cable or a cable harness is being removed or
fitted.

• Never disassemble an airbag module.

A removed airbag module must always be placed with the detonator side downwards.

• When an airbag module has been removed, ensure that no foreign bodies (metal swarf etc.) come into contact with
the airbag module (detonator) terminal. It is important to store airbag modules carefully.

• Damaged SRS cables or connectors must not be repaired or partially replaced. When a fault is found in a connector
or component in a cable harness, the complete ignition cable and the relevant cable harness must be replaced.

• Do not tamper with control unit terminals. There is a risk of electrostatic discharge.

• Do not turn the steering wheel when the contact reel is locked in position as this can break off the pin in the
contact reel.

• Ensure that nobody is in the cab when the battery is reconnected following the repair or replacement of a component.

SRS Fault tracing

Auto diagnosis with fault indications
In line with Volvo principles the control unit has an
integrated diagnostic system which is connected to the
diagnostic connector.

The two principle functions of the diagnostic system

1 To, using an auto diagnostic process, continuously
monitor the SRS and indicate any faults that my occur.
D
If a fault occurs the control unit will light a control lamp
(SRS lamp) in the instrument cluster and store a fault
code, which can be read off later via the diagnostic
connector.

2 To record faults in the form of fault codes that can later

be read off by a technician. The fault codes are stored
in the control unit and read off using the diagnostic
connector.

Fault warning for the driver

If a fault occurs the driver is warned through a control
lamp in the instrument cluster (SRS lamp) being lit.

The fault warning occurs when a fault is discovered. The

control lamp remains lit until the fault is rectified and the
fault code removed.

T8006853

Fault indication for the technician

If a fault has been registered, there must have been a
“fault” for a certain number of diagnostic periods, which
are counted, in order for the equivalent fault code to be
registered.

For the airbag module and the ignition cable, 10 diagnostic

periods are required, which amount to about 10 seconds.

For the SRS warning lamp and cable circuit, 40 diagnostic

periods are required, which amount to about 40 seconds.

T8006866

Intermittent faults
Intermittent faults are stored in the control unit. If the fault
is not active, the control lamp will not be lit.
Volvo Truck Corporation Date Group No. Release Page
Service Bulletin 4.07 88 01 05 20(43)

Intermittent faults
If a fault is detected, a fault code is not registered directly.
Instead, a counter starts to count for the type of fault
concerned. A registered fault must have been a “fault”
for a certain number of diagnostic periods, which are
counted, in order for the equivalent fault code to be
registered.

Intermittent faults normally concern cables and

connections. Check as follows:

Other fault symptoms

D
If an intermittent fault is suspected:

Remove the fault codes after they have been read off.
Wait 50 seconds.
Read off the fault codes again.

If the fault codes no longer exist, this can be because of

an intermittent fault that is not now prevalent. It is possible
for a fault code concerning the SRS lamp and the cable
circuit to be stored in the control unit without the driving
receiving warning of this via the control lamp.

Some faults can occur without direct indication being created and by systematically eliminating the alternative
given in the form of a fault code in accordance withtable fault codes.
page 23. To find the cause of the fault, fault tracing must

Fault code 1-2-7

SRS lamp, open circuit or short circuit
Conditions that can cause the fault code
The control unit checks that the signal in the SRS lamp
cable is not defective in terms of interruption, short circuit
to voltage or short circuit to earth. If a fault is detected
during this check, the fault code 1-2-7 will be created.

The SRS lamp lights and indicates to the driver that there
is a fault in the SRS. For this to happen, the lamp must
not be defective and the fault must be active. This is to
say that fault code 1-2-7 can be stored in the control unit

If the lamp does not light: This is most likely caused by a short circuit in the earth
