This service manual describes the design and function of the SRS airbag that Volvo
vehicles are equipped with. The service manual contains a description of the various
airbag components as well as of the relevant fault codes and how to use them.
The service manual covers fault tracing procedures and instructions for repair and
replacement of the steering wheel, airbag module and contact reel. At the end of the
service manual there is a table containing function check procedures and a wiring
diagram. There is also a list of operation numbers.
Note: The service manual is compiled for use in Volvo service workshops and other
authorised workshops with trained, qualified personnel. The procedures for service and
fault tracing are compiled for use by qualified personnel only. They are not intended
for use by unqualified personnel. Volvo is not responsible for any possible accidents,
material damage or injury that may be caused by failure to follow the service procedures
or by work carried out by unqualified personnel.

Safety instructions
WARNING
Never drive a vehicle in which the the airbag has been
inflated. Steering can be problematic with the airbag
hanging out from the centre of the steering wheel. And,
additionally, other safety systems may be damaged.
Long term exposure to the smoke and dust that
is emitted when the airbag is activated can cause
irritation to the skin and eyes.
D
If it is necessary to measure resistance, use Volvo
multimeter 9510060 and follow the instructions carefully.
WARNING
NEVER use an ohmmeter or similar voltage carrying
measuring instrument to measure the resistance in the
airbag module or to test the cables when the airbag
module is connected up. This could cause it to release.
WARNING
Be careful not to cause any damage during fault tracing
and repair work on the SRS.
Unless otherwise stated the starter key must be in the
Off position and the negative battery cable removed.
Follow the instructions in the hand book carefully when
working on SRS components to prevent the airbag
from inflating or damage being caused accidentally.

SRS fault codes, bear the following in mind
When a code is stored (which cannot be removed) the SRS airbag may be out of function.
• All stored codes must be read off at least once before they can be removed.
When all the faults have been rectified, only code 1-1-1 will be shown.
If fault code 1-1-2 is shown, it cannot be removed. Instead the control unit must be sent to Volvo in accordance
with the relevant work procedure.
• Follow the work procedure closely. Do not omit any steps before the cause of the fault has been identified. The
airbag module can be activated if the work procedure is not followed.
• The starter key must always be in the Off position and the negative battery cable removed before fault tracing is begun.
• Never use an ohmmeter or other voltage carrying measuring instrument for measuring the resistance of the airbag
module.
• The starter key must always be in the Off position and the negative battery cable removed before repair work
or replacement of a component is begun.
• The battery must be disconnected when an airbag module, an ignition cable or a cable harness is being removed or
fitted.
• When an airbag module has been removed, ensure that no foreign bodies (metal swarf etc.) come into contact with
the airbag module (detonator) terminal. It is important to store airbag modules carefully.
• Damaged SRS cables or connectors must not be repaired or partially replaced. When a fault is found in a connector
or component in a cable harness, the complete ignition cable and the relevant cable harness must be replaced.
• Do not tamper with control unit terminals. There is a risk of electrostatic discharge.
• Do not turn the steering wheel when the contact reel is locked in position as this can break off the pin in the
contact reel.
• Ensure that nobody is in the cab when the battery is reconnected following the repair or replacement of a component.

Intermittent faults
If a fault is detected, a fault code is not registered directly.
