king every day. (Article ‘the’ is used before singular count nouns once mentioned.)

Note use of ‘the’ in the following.


1. before superlative degree:

a. the best, the last, the chief Minister, the prime minister,

2. before comparative degree (when one of the two item is singled out)

a. He is the finer batsman of the two.

b. He is a finer batsman than other.

3. Things which are only one in the world:

a. The sun, the moon, the world, the equator, the north, the east

4. In place of possessive adjective: a. I hit him in the head. (his head)

5. with common noun when one noun is used to represent the whole class:

a. The horse is a faithful animal.

6. with an adjective with a plural notion to indicate a class of persons:

a. The rich should help the poor. (it means ‘all the rich & ‘all the poor’)

7. As an adverb in case of certain comparatives:

a. The more we get the more we want.

b. The harder you work, the better it will be.

8. To suggest distribution:

a. We can buy orange by the dozen.

b. Cloth is sold by the miter.

9. Article is not used before proper noun but if it is used as common noun article
‘the’ is used:

a. Shakespeare is a great writer.

b. He is as good write but not a Shakespeare. (not as great as)

c. Kalidas is the Shakespeare of India. (as great as)

10. Article ‘the’ is used before the names of:


a. Rivers: the Ganga, the Yamuna

Omission of articles:

1. with particular noun: Man is a social animal.(all men)


2. With material nouns in general sense:

Gold is one of the heaviest metals. (not the gold)

Water is the source of all life. (not the water)

The water of the Ganga is now highly polluted.

3. With collective nouns: mankind, people, society, company

Mankind loves nature.

4. With plural nouns used to denote a class:

Poets are seldom impersonal.(not the poets)

Children are usually naughty. (not the children)

3. Transformation:
Interchanging Affirmative and Negative Sentences:

(A) By removing or using the ‘adverb’ –too:


1. Affirmative: This news is too absurd to believe.
Negative: This news is so absurd that it cannot be believed.
2. Affirmative: He is so credulous that he cannot be easily deceived.
3. Negative: He is too credulous not to be easily deceived.
(B) By interchanging the degree of comparison:
1. Affirmative: She is the prettiest girl in the class.
Negative: No other girl in the class is as pretty as she.(is)
2. Affirmative: Kanpur is more populous then Lukhnow.
Negative: Lukhnow is not so populous as Kanpur.
(C) By using ‘No sonner…..than…..’ for ‘as soon as’
1. Affirmative: As soon as I saw the advertisement, I emailed my bio-data.
Negative: No sooner did I see the advertisement than I emailed my bio-
data.
3. Affirmative:

As soon as the summer starts, there is acute power shortage in the city.

Negative:

No sooner does the summer start than there is acute power shortage in the city.

(D)By using a word of opposite meaning after negative word or by the use of
double negative:
1. Affirmative: I admit that you have put in your best.
Negative: I do not deny that you have put in your best.
2. Affirmative: We tried every plan.
Negative: We did not leave any plan untried.
(E)By making a sentence ‘Negative’ and ‘interrogative’
simultaneously

Negative: Didn’t the minister himself clear the file?

2. Affirmative: You have violated certain conditions of the agreement.

(F)By changing ‘only’ to ‘none but’
1. Affirmative: Only a fool could have done it.
Negative: None but a fool could have done it.
2. Affirmative: Only a brute can behave so cruelly.
Negative: None but a brute can behave so cruelly.
(G) Some other methods:
1. Affirmative: But for your help he would have failed.

Negative: If you had not helped him, he would have failed.

2. Affirmative: Every dark cloud has a silver lining.

Negative: There is no dark cloud without a silver lining.

Interchanging ‘Interrogative’ and ‘Assertive’


3. Interrogative: Can I ever forget your kindness?
Assertive: I can never forget your kindness.
4. Interrogative: Isn’t she exceptionally intelligent for her age?
Assertive: She is exceptionally intelligent for her age.
5. Interrogative: Who is free from sin?
Assertive: Nobody is free from sin.
6. Interrogative: Who was there to listen to her appeals?
Assertive: There was none to listen to her appeals.
7. Interrogative: What have I done to incur your wrath?
Assertive: I have done nothing to incur your wrath.
8. Interrogative: When can their glory fade?
Assertive: Their glory can never fade.

Assertive: Solitude does not have any charms.

Interchanging ‘exclamatory’ and ‘Assertive’ sentences:
1. Exclamatory: How lonely the child is!
Assertive: The child is very lonely.
2. Exclamatory: O that spring were eternal!
Assertive: I wish that spring were eternal.
3. Exclamatory: What a nuisance these noisy loudspeakers are!
Assertive: These noisy loudspeakers are a big nuisance.

Exclamatory: Would that I were a millionaire!


Assertive: I wish that I were a millionaire.
4. Exclamatory: If only I could see him once!

5. Exclamatory: A sailor and afraid of storm!

Type: 0 : used to describe General Truths, Scientific Fact
If + The Simple Present Tense, The Simple Present Tense.
If you are kind to other, others are kind to you.
If you throw an object upward, it comes down.
Type: 1: used to describe probable (likely) condition
If + The Simple present Tense (v1),The Simple Future Tense (will/shall + v1)
If you accept all the terms and conditions, we will confirm the order.
Type: 2: Used to describe improbable (unlikely) condition
If + The Simple Past Tense, would (v1)

Type: 3: used to describe impossible condition
