Ata 72

This chapter of the ATA manual covers aircraft engines and their components, divided into sections on the front, power and cylinder sections, as well as the supercharger and lubrication systems. It describes components such as the crankshaft, camshaft, cylinders, pistons, valves and accessories that work together to combust fuel and convert it into rotational power for the propeller. Diagrams are provided to illustrate parts like the crankshaft, camshaft, piston rings and valve operation.

ENGINE
ATA 72 - Engine -
This ATA chapter refers to the aircraft engines as the units
and components which are used to induce and convert fuel-
air mixture into power.
72 – ENGINE - Reciprocating

Subjected to most of the forces developed by the engine, its main purpose is to transform the
reciprocating motion of the piston into rotary motion for rotation of the propeller.

Its is generally forged from a very strong alloy, such as chromium-nickel-molybdenum steel.

Reading asignment:

Read about crackshaft, its main parts and balance.

Cam shaft

The valve mechanism of an opposed engine is operated

by a camshaft. The camshaft is driven by a gear that
mates with another gear attached to the crankshaft.

Reading asignment:

Read about camshaft and how it controls valve operation.
