SELF –LEARNING HOME TASK (SLHT)

Subject: Science Grade: 6 Level: Elementary Quarter: 3 Week: 3

MELC : Demonstrate how sound ,heat, light and electricity can be transformed
Competency Code :S6FE – IIId-f-2

Objectives:
K- Identify the different forms of energy
S- Discover how some forms of energy work
A - Display appreciation of the different forms of energy use in their daily activities

Name _________________________ Section ____________ Date__________

School_________________________ District_____________________________

A. Readings/Discussions:

Imagine that you are one of these pupils watching the basketball game. What will you be
doing while watching your favorite team?
Will you also clap your hands?
Will you shout?
Will you wave your banner?
Will you feel the heat of your body making you perspire?

No matter what you do, you are using energy. Energy comes from the Greek word “
energia “ which means “ in-work.”Energy is the ability to do work. Without energy you cannot
accomplish anything. You cannot move, heart cannot pump, eyes cannot see, ears cannot hear
and you can`t breathe, eat and speak. In other words without energy one will not exist. Energy
enables us to move, shout, warm up and even think.
Energy comes in different forms .

DIFFERENT FORMS OF ENERGY

1. Mechanical energy is a form of energy possessed by a moving object. It is also an

energy stored in objects by the application of force. When you sweep the floor, move
your desk or chair, wash your clothes, carry firewood and other that requires movement
of the body, you are using energy stored in your muscles .When you go out on a windy
day to fly kite. Your kite will be pushed by the mechanical energy of the wind. The wind
makes your kite fly. The energy that enables your muscles to do the work and the wind
energy that made the kite fly are called mechanical energy.

2. Chemical energy is energy stored in the molecules of matter.

Example of this chemical energy is Energy present inside the dry cell. The chemical
energy stored in a dry cell is turned into usable form when put in appliances. It changes
to electrical energy and then to radiant energy when you connect a wire to light a bulb.

3. Radiant is a form of energy that travels through empty space.

Radiant energy radiates in all directions. It can travel through a vacuum or
an empty space and it can be transferred to another body. It may be in the form
of light, ultraviolet rays, x-rays, infrared radiation, radio waves, microwaves and
radar.

4. Electrical energy is the energy produced by moving electrons .It is a flow of

charged particles called electrons. Electricity and electrical energy are two different
things. Electricity flows slowly in a complete circle while energy moves differently .In
electrical energy ,the energy does not follow the circular flow of electricity.

5. Sound energy is a form of energy produced by vibrating objects. When objects

vibrate, sound waves are produced. Sound waves are able to carry vibrations
through a medium or transmitter either solid ,liquid or gas ;which results to the
transfer of the energy collected in the vibrations. Scientists use units called
decibels to measure the intensity of sound.

6. Thermal or Heat energy is energy present in everybody due to the motion of its
molecules. The sun and the heat from volcano are examples of thermal energy.

7. Nuclear energy is energy released by the splitting of the nucleus called fission and by
combining the nucleus called fusion. Nuclear energy is an alternative source of
energy Nuclear energy is “cleaner” than fossil fuels since nuclear power plants do not
emit dust and other particles that cause air pollution. This is used to generate electricity
to provide fuels for the engines in ships and submarines and to make atomic bombs.
It is also used in the field of medicine.

GUIDE

For the Teacher

Advise the students to read the Reading and Discussion portion before they
attempt to answer the practice exercises. Let the learners go through the parts
sequentially to help them understand the topic easily. The Key Answers are for you
to refer during the checking. Don’t include it in the printing.

For the Learner:

Read thoroughly and understand the Self-Learning Home Task from the first part
to the last part. By doing so, will help you understand better the topic. If you still
have enough time, do it twice for more understanding. You can use a dictionary if
you find it hard to comprehend the science terms. Use a separate sheet for your
answers.

For the Parent/Home Tutor:

Assist your child and make sure that he/she reads the Self-Learning Home Task
from the beginning up to end, to ensure proper understanding of the concepts. Don’t
feed the answer to your child. Let her/him do it of his own.
