9th Chapter 7

The document contains sample conceptual questions and answers about properties of matter for a 9th grade class. It includes questions about why it's easier to break two walnuts squeezed together compared to one, why the cutting edge of a knife is made very thin, how the structure of a camel's feet allows it to walk more easily in desert conditions, what would happen to a balloon filled at the top of a mountain as it's brought down the mountain, how the water level of a swimming pool is affected when an anchor is dropped from a rowboat, and why steel is more elastic than rubber.

CONCEPTUAL QUESTIONS CLASS 9TH

CHAPTER: 7

Properties Of Matter
Q1: Walnut can be broken in the hand by squeezing two together but not one. Why?
ANS:
Instead of one walnut, if we squeeze two walnuts together in hands, the contact area
decreases significantly due to which the stress or pressure increases sufficiently. As a result
the walnuts can be broken easily.
Explanation:
When a single walnut is taken then the pressure by your hands act on it from all sides. On the
other hand taking two walnuts decreases the area of contact and thus pressure increases by
𝐅
the relation, P=
𝐀

Thus, the decreases in area causes larger pressure on walnut and breaks easily.

Q.2: Why is the cutting edge of the knife made very thin?
ANS: The cutting edge of then knife is made very thin as to decrease the contact area causing
an increase in pressure which cuts easily.
𝐅
We know that the pressure is given by, P= shows that pressure is inversely proportional to
𝐀
the area that is greater the area, smaller will be the pressure and vice versa. Now the cutting
edge of the knife is made very thin for getting smaller area and maximum pressure. By doing
so we can various objects with knife very easily.

Q.3: Explain how and why came is have adapted to allow them to walk more easily in desert
conditions. ?
ANS:
The structure of the feet of camel is flat and wide. This increases the contact area of it on the
𝐅
ground in desert conditions and thus decreases the exerted pressure given by, P=
𝐀
Increasing area causes larger contact between sand and feet due to which pressure decreases
by the feet on sand. Decrease in pressure keeps the feet to the upper surface and not inserted
in sand.

CONCEPTUAL QUESTIONS CLASS 9TH

Q.4: If you filled an airtight balloon at the top of a mountain, would you descend the
mountain? Explain.
ANS: The balloon will contract when you fill an airtight it at the top of mountains and then
bring it down.
Explanation:
What you fill a balloon up at the mountains, the external atmospheric pressure and internal
pressure on balloon’s wall by air balances each other as shown in figure below, as you go
down the mountains, atmospheric pressure increases but the internal pressure remains the
same. This increase in atmospheric pressure causes the contraction of balloon.

Q.5: A rowboat is floating in a swimming pool. When the anchor is fropped, will the water
level in the swimming pool increase, decrease or remain the same? Explain.
ANS:
When you put the anchor into the water, the pools water level goes down a bit.
When the anchor is in the boat, the water is displaced more specific shape of the boat. When
the anchor is dropped into the water, it sinks and displace water whose volume is equal to
the volume of the anchor. The water displaced by weight is more than water displaced by
volume. So when the anchor is dropped into the water, the level of water in the pool
decreases.

Q.6: Which material is more elastic steel of rubber and why?

ANS:
Steel is more elastic than rubber because steel comes back to it original shape faster than
rubber when the deforming force is removed. Another reason is that for a given stress
(stretching force per unit area) is much smaller in steel than in rubber which increases the
elasticity of the steel as compared to rubber. Mathematically.
𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬
Elastic modulus = P=
𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧

So, when you apply stress on rubber deforms more easily than steel. When the deforming
force is removed, steel attains its original shape more quickly than rubber within elastic limit.
This is why we say that steel is more elastic than rubber.
