Living As Those Made Alive in Christ 3: Ecclesiastes 1:2

The passages discuss the meaninglessness of life when focused only on earthly possessions and pleasures. Ecclesiastes says that life is meaningless without considering one's relationship with God. Colossians encourages setting one's mind on heavenly things rather than earthly concerns. The parable of the rich fool illustrates that one can work hard to acquire wealth but neglect one's soul, and that true riches consist of being generous and having a right relationship with God.

Ecclesiastes 1:2

New International Version (NIV)

“Meaningless! Meaningless!”

    says the Teacher.

“Utterly meaningless!
    Everything is meaningless.”

Ecclesiastes 2:21-23 New International Version (NIV)

For a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then they
21

must leave all they own to another who has not toiled for it. This too is
meaningless and a great misfortune. 22 What do people get for all the toil and
anxious striving with which they labor under the sun? 23 All their days their
work is grief and pain; even at night their minds do not rest. This too is
meaningless.
Colossians 3:1-5 New International Version (NIV)

Living as Those Made Alive in Christ

3 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things
above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on
things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now
hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your  life, appears, then you
[a]

also will appear with him in glory.

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature:sexual

immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

Colossians 3:9-11 New International Version (NIV)
Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its

practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in

knowledge in the image of its Creator. 11 Here there is no Gentile or
Jew,circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but
Christ is all, and is in all.
Luke 12:13-21 New International Version (NIV)
The Parable of the Rich Fool
Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the
13

inheritance with me.”

Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between

14

you?” 15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds

of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an
16

abundant harvest. 17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place

to store my crops.’

“Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build
18

bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself,
“You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink
and be merry.”’

“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded
20

from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’

“This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is
21

not rich toward God.”
