This engine is designed for electronic control of most engine operating functions. A network of electronic controllers will communicate through the
data links in order to share information that is related to the operation of the engine. Refer to Illustration 3 for an overview of the control modules for
this engine application. The control modules that are on the data links share information in order to provide optimum operation of the engine and of
the machine. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Data Link Features" for further information that is related to the data links for this application.

Engine ECM
The engine ECM consists of two main components, the control computer (hardware) and the flash file (software). The control computer consists of a
microprocessor and electronic circuitry. The flash file contains the operational characteristics of the engine. The operating maps that influence engine
performance also contained in the flash file.
The engine ECM provides engine control by altering the signal that is sent to the fuel injector solenoids. By controlling the timing and duration of the
injector signals, the engine ECM controls the engine speed and the engine power.

(47) Power module
(48) Controller for the FCV
The controller for the FCV receives throttle commands from the engine ECM. The controller translates the command to a valve position for the FCV.
The ECM provides a PWM output in order to drive the throttle signal for the controller. Messages are communicated over the local CAN data link in
order to provide a backup signal for the throttle control.
A power module is used to supply electrical power to the controller for the fuel control valve. The power module is used to convert battery voltage
(24 VDC) to 14.0 ± 1.5 VDC that is used by the controller. This power is available while the battery disconnect switch is in the run position.
A keyswitch input is provided in order to bring the controller out of sleep mode.

The electronic fluid temperature control provides accurate control for the engine cooling system. The system provides self-diagnostic functions and
increased service reliability. These advances help to reduce the repair times and warranty claims that are associated with the cooling system.
The electronic fluid temperature control consists of a three-way valve that directs coolant flow through the engine. The valve assembly incorporates a
TCM, a coolant temperature sensor, and a piston that rides on a lead screw. The lead screw is turned by an electric motor. The electric motor is

When the temperature control module is powered, the controller drives the piston to the position of zero percent bypass. provides a reset for the
electric motor and for the position of the piston. When the piston hits the stop, a clicking sound can be heard from the unit. This reset function will be
performed by the controller in approximately 80 seconds. The reset establishes the position of the piston prior to the controlled movement of the
piston.
The TCM controls the coolant temperature to a desired value that is based on a signal from the coolant temperature sensor and a desired temperature.
The TCM receives the signal from the coolant temperature sensor. As the coolant temperature of the engine varies, the sensor signal also varies. The
controller detects the change in coolant temperature and the electric motor is energized. The electric motor turns the lead screw. This motion actuates
the piston and the piston is repositioned in the bore of the valve body.
The desired temperature for the TCM is communicated from the engine ECM via the global CAN data link during normal operation. The desired
temperature that is communicated from the engine ECM to the TCM is 78° C (172° F). A default setting for the desired temperature is also stored in
the internal memory of the temperature control. If the communication to the control module is lost, the TCM will use the default value as the desired
temperature. The TCM will continue to control the coolant temperature to the default value without interruption of the operation of the engine. The
default setting for the desired temperature for this application is 78° C (172° F).
If the temperature sensor fails, the TCM will control the valve to zero percent bypass. Full engine cooling will be provided in order to allow the
engine to continue running.
Note: If the engine is operated with a failed sensor, the engine may be overcooled. Remove the engine from service and perform the necessary
repairs immediately.

The ether injection system is used to introduce ether into the intake air of the engine during engine cranking. The system also ensures that the engine
maintains ignition after the engine is running. The system is enabled during cold ambient conditions and the system is fully automatic. The quantity of
ether that is injected is controlled by the orifice that is installed in the ether injection system. The air density and the temperature of the engine during
engine cranking is used in order to activate the ether injection system. Either the coolant temperature or the intake manifold air temperature is used to
determine the temperature of the engine. The atmospheric pressure sensor is used to determine the air density.

(78) Filtered fuel pressure sensor
(79) Temperature sensor for the high-pressure fuel
The controller for the high pressure common rail fuel system receives a desired rail pressure from the engine ECM. This signal is used by the ECM to
determine a setpoint for the fuel control valve. The controller adjusts the fuel control valve in order to match the actual rail pressure to the desired rail
pressure.
The fuel control valve is a suction throttle. The valve regulates the fuel pressure by limiting the volume of fuel that is available at the inlet of the
pump.
Electrical power to the controller for the fuel control valve is supplied by the power module. Power to the power module is supplied by the battery for
the engine. Voltage from the keyswitch is supplied directly to the controller in order to power up the controller during an ECM powerup.

The ORS meters engine oil that has been filtered into the fuel supply for the engine. The engine consumes the used oil during the normal process of
combustion. The amount of oil that is metered is calculated by the engine ECM. The calculation is based on either the actual load factor for the engine
or on the fuel consumption for the engine.
If the application is equipped with a makeup tank, fresh oil is continuously added to the oil pan as the ORS operates. The regular addition of fresh oil
allows the oil change interval to be extended beyond the normal oil change interval. Regular S·O·S Oil Analysis for the engine oil determines the oil
change interval for the engine.
Prelube System
Integrated control of the engine starting sequence and the engine prelubrication system is required in order to guarantee that proper engine starting
procedures are followed. The prelube system prevents excessive engine wear and damage to engine components. The engine ECM provides automatic
control of the engine prelube system. If the engine is restarted within 120 seconds of a recent engine shutdown, the prelube cycle is suppressed by the
engine ECM.

Before the engine is started, place the shift lever in the NEUTRAL position, engage the parking brake, and ensure that the engine is stopped. As the
operator turns the keyswitch from the STOP position to the CRANK position, the transmission ECM detects the signal. The transmission ECM
communicates a prelube command to the engine ECM via the Cat Data Link. The engine ECM begins the prelube cycle. The operator must hold the
keyswitch in the CRANK position until the engine cranks in order for the prelube cycle to be completed.
The transmission ECM waits for the engine ECM to communicate that the prelube cycle is successful before the transmission ECM begins to crank
the engine. One of the following conditions must be met before the engine ECM considers the prelube cycle to be completed:
When one of these conditions are met, the engine ECM delays the communication of the completion of the prelube cycle for 3 seconds. This delay
prevents damage to the prelube pump. When the transmission ECM receives the communication from the engine ECM, the transmission ECM will
initiate the engine cranking.
If neither of the conditions is met, the engine ECM delays the communication of the completion of the prelube cycle for 3 seconds. The transmission
ECM initiates engine cranking without the prelube complete signal from the engine ECM. A 233(2) Low Engine Pre-Lube Pressure will become
active. The code indicates that a mechanical problem with the prelube system has occurred and the problem must be diagnosed and repaired. If the
engine oil temperature is below 50° C (122° F) and the conditions are not met, a 233(2) Low Engine Pre-Lube Pressure will be logged. For this
occurrence of the event, the 233(2) will be active for only 30 seconds.
Prelube Override
NOTICE
Prelube is required for these engines. The prelube override must only
be used in the case of an emergency. Damage to engine components
may result from the excessive use of the override feature.
The prelube override allows the operator to bypass the engine prelube function in the case of an emergency. If the keyswitch is relaxed from the
CRANK position to the RUN position during the prelube cycle, the cycle is stopped by the engine ECM. The prelube cycle is overridden by turning
the keyswitch to the STOP position and then turning the keyswitch to the CRANK position within six seconds. A E098(1) Engine Pre-lube Override
is logged when the engine prelube function is overridden by the operator. When the sequence is complete, the engine ECM communicates a command
to the transmission ECM and the crank cycle begins.
