Subject: Basic Electrical Engineering

1. An alternating current of sinusoidal waveform has an rms value of 10A. What is the maximum value
of the current? [Ans: 14.142A]
2. The following three sinusoidal currents flow into a junction:
i1=3√ 2 Sin(ωt), i2=5 √ 2 Sin (ωt+300) and i3=6√ 2 Sin(ωt-1200)
Find the time expression for the resultant sinusoidal current which leaves the junction. Draw the
phasor diagram. [Ans: 7.214 Sin(ωt-31.910)
V . Z1
3. If V = 45√ 2 - j45, Z1 = 2.5√ 2 - j2.5√ 2, Z2 = 7.5 + j7.5√ 3. Find . [Ans: 30∠-450]
Z2
4. If v = 14.14 Sin(ωt+30) V and i=11.31 Sin(ωt-30)A. Find
a. Maximum Value of each. [Ans: Vm=14.14, Im=11.31]
b. The rms value of each. [Ans: Vrms=10, Irms=8]

c. The phasor expression in polar and rectangular form. [ AnsI =8:V∠−30=6.928−

5. Find the time taken for a sinusoidal alternating current of maximum value 20A to reach 15A for the
first time if the current starts from zero. The supply frequency is 40 Hz. [Ans: 3.37 mS ]
[Hint: i=20 Sinωt. When i=15 A, 15=20 sinωt => ωt=sin -1(15/20)= 48.590 =0.848 rad. Now,
ω=2πf=251.32 rad/sec. Thus t= 0.848/251.32 sec = 3.37 milliseconds]
6. A sinusoidal alternating voltage of peak value 24 V is applied to a circuit resulting a current of
maximum 16 A. The current is also sinusoidal and lags the voltage by 45 0. Draw the voltage and
current waveforms in proper phase relationship over 1 complete cycle.
7. Calculate the average, rms value, form factor and peak factor for the following saw tooth waveform.
