RELATIVE CLAUSES
Relative clauses give more information about a subject or object. They usually follow and
agree with the noun they modify and often occur between the subject and the verb.
The most common relative pronouns are:
Pronouns Used for Examples
who People (subj.) The people who came to the party had a great time.
whom People (obj.) That’s the teacher whom I told you about.
that People (both) The person that I told you about works for IBM
which Things (both) The house which my grandfather built is now a museum.
that Things (both) The animals that live in this forest are really lucky.
where Places The school where I study is a hundred years old.
in which The town in which they live is really crowded.
why Reason The reason why I’m here is to invite you to my wedding.
when Time Friday is the day when we have couscous.
whose Possession The woman whose car is parked outside is a social worker.
