The document discusses a study on the effects of social media exposure on the language performance of grade 11 students in the Philippines. It notes that while students receive language exposure in the classroom and through social media, their actual language performance is still inconsistent and often low. The researcher aims to assess students' level of social media language exposure and determine if it impacts their linguistic abilities, as addressing poor English performance is important given the Philippines' reputation for English education and students' low scores on international assessments.

The Effects of Social Media Exposure on the Language Performance of the

Grade 11 Students of Advance Montessori Education Center of Isabela-

Xian Zeus D. Laggui

Language exposure serves an important role in second language learning. It

could be viewed as the opportunities or contacts a learner has with the language which

would more likely result to increased language inputs. It is generally believed that the

more exposure language learners get, the easier it is for them to master a second

language.

In other countries like China, South Korea, and Japan, learning the English

language seems difficult due to the very limited social interaction and exposure in the

environment. In fact, these nationalities prefer learning English in the Philippines due

to the country’s good reputation in speaking the foreign language. However, exposure

to language these days do not only happen in a physical environment due to the

existence of the internet.

In the recent years, most people spend their free time using their mobile phones

and browsing the internet. In fact, a new trend of using Social Media or Social

Networking Sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Reddit and LinkedIn have been

highlighted in consonance with the rise of technology. These social media sites have

now become platforms for language learners to intensify their language exposure.

Hence, it is wise to say that the environment once highlighted in language learning has

shifted to a more modern and more complex way.

The researcher noticed that although most learners have enough exposure inside

the classroom and with social media sites, there is still inconsistency with students’

language performance. Amidst the dominant English language exposure in the

Philippines, it is also observed that many students have reached their Junior High

School with very low Proficiency in English. This is also reflected in the poor

performance of Region 02 National Achievement Test (NAT) takers in 2018 who

received remarks lower than overall mean. Another indicator of this poor performance

is the international ranking for reading of the Philippines in the Programme for

International Student Assessment or PISA. The fifteen-year-old students in the

Philippines who took the test scored the lowest in reading out of 123 countries.

Thus, considering all these, the researcher conceptualized this study because

there is a need to assess the level of language exposure of students active in social

media sites and know whether their language exposure have impacted their linguistic

performance.
