G8 Q1 Linear Equations in Two Variables 3.2

The document discusses finding the slope of a line from its equation. It explains that the slope is denoted by m and can be found by converting the equation into slope-intercept form, y=mx+b. It provides examples of using the addition and multiplication properties of equality to isolate y and solve for m. An activity asks students to find the slope m of 10 linear equations by converting them into slope-intercept form.

GRADE 8 – LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES

Learning Competency:
Illustrates and finds the slope of a line given two points, equation, and graph.

Concept
SLOPE OF A LINE- In mathematics, the slope or gradient of a line is a number that describes both the direction and
the steepness of the line. Slope is often denoted by the letter m.

FINDING SLOPE OF A LINE

B. GIVEN AN EQUATION
- to find the slope of a line given an equation, convert the equation into its slope-intercept form; y=mx+b ,
m = slope and b = y-intercept
REMEMBER:
 Addition Property of Equality (APE) – Adding the same number on both side of the equation, balance the equation
 Multiplication Property of Equality (MPE) – multiplying the same number on both side of the equation, balance the equation
For Example:
(i) Find the slope of the line with an equation of 3 x+ 2 y =14
Change 3 x+ 2 y =14 into y=mx +b form
3 x+ 2 y =14 apply Addition Property of Equality, to retain variable y and removed other terms in
the left side of the equation

(−3 x )+ 3 x +2 y=−3 x +14 it becomes

2 y=−3 x +14 apply Multiplication Property of Equality, to eliminate the coefficient of y

1 1
[2 y=−3 x +14] it becomes;
2 2

−3 x −3
y= +7 , here m = and b = 7
2 2

−3
m= 2
