BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology: Lab Report

This lab report details an experiment to identify fabrics using a burn test. Six fabrics (cotton, wool, silk, acetate, nylon, polyester) were tested by cutting small samples and observing their burning characteristics, including how they burn and melt, any odors or smoke, and the residue. A table compares the results, showing differences like how quickly materials burn and whether any beads or ash remain. The conclusions are that the burn test can identify fiber types based on these properties and that safety precautions must be taken when conducting the experiment.

1. INTRODUCTION
The burn test involves burning a sample of fabric and observing the various
characteristics shown by it after burning in order to determine its fiber content.

2. OBJECTIVES
Do the fibers melt and/or burn?
Do the fibers shrink from the flame?
What type of odor do the fumes have?
What is the characteristic s of any smoke?
What does the residue of the burned fibers look like?

3. METHODOLOGY
3.1- Raw materials:
Six Type of fabric, those are-
1. Cotton
2. Wool
3. Silk
4. Acetate
5. Nylon
6. Polyester

3.2- Necessary equipment:

Candle Light

Match Box

Testing Tray

Tweezers

Rubber Pad

3.3- Different process/Methods:

3.3.1- Working procedure:
Cut a small piece of fabric (1 inch square) Hold one side with tweezers
over fireproof dish

Light the other end with match

Let the piece burn completely, dropping the fabric when necessary

Take note of the smell and the make as it burns, BUT do not put the
burning fabric directly under your nose

Leave the residue cool at the bottom of the dish so that you can handle
when cool

3.3.2-Data Analysis:
Fabric Test Burn Table

Fabric Description Flame & Residue Oder Smoke Ash

burns quickly
Natural may flare burning grey or fine and soft
Cotton cellulose fiber no beads remain paper white easily crumble
after burning may continue to
glow
burns slowly dark smoke gritty powder or
Natural fabric curls away from flame burned hair dark, brittle,
Wool cellulose fiber leaves a brittle crushable bead or feathers easily crushed
bead
Natural burns slowly burned hair little or no dark gritty ash
Silk cellulose fiber fabric curls away from the flame or meat smoke when beads
leaves a dark easily crushed bead crushed
Man-made flares quickly black
Acetate cellulose fiber melts and drips hot vinegar hazardous no ash
leaves a hard bead that cannot be smoke
crushed
Man-made flares quickly
cellulose fiber melts and drips celery hazardous no ash
Nylon leaves a hard bead that cannot be fume
crushed

Man-made burns and melts

Polyester cellulose fiber shrinks away from flame chemical black smoke no ash
leaves hard dark brown bead odor

4. RESULT & DISCUSSION

The fiber burn chart helps in identifying the nature of the fibers on the basis of
their burning characteristics and the smell and other properties of the remains
such as smoke, ash etc.

5. PRECAUTION
The burn test has to be carried out with great precaution.
Arrangement of water near the site should be made.
The test should be done in a metal bucket. Plastic containers should always
be avoided.

6. CONCLUSION
Our teacher and lab assistants are very much helpful to us. Their well teaching
and instruction help us greatly to understand this practical. I saw all of machine in
our lab and collect some data of machine. I think this practical will be very helpful
in my future career.
