Questions 26 to 31 are based on the following passage.

1 Having just managed to squeeze herself into a ladies’ compartment in

Mumbai suburban electric train, 21-year-old Roma Talreja tried to settle into a
corner near the door. The train hurtled ahead and Roma, jammed between other
women, was trying to find some space to stand safely on when she suddenly got
pushed, lost her foothold and panicked. Her hands reached for the steel railing 5
above, but finding only air, Roma was thrown out of the coach. She was knocked
out.

2 Standing near the door of another train speeding in the opposite direction,
20-year-old Baleshwar Mishra couldn’t believe what he had just seen – a woman in
a black salwar-kameez lying next to the tracks. Impulsively, Baleshwar grabbed the 10
train’s red emergency chain and pulled it down frantically. The train screeched,
slowing down. He then surveyed the compartment full of wary faces and shouted,
“Let’s go and help her.” To his dismay, nobody volunteered.

3 His heart hammering in his chest, Baleshwar shoved himself to the door and
jumped off the still moving train. As he landed on the ground, a burst of pain shot 15
up his ankle. Ignoring it, he got up and started to sprint back between the tracks as
his train picked up speed again and disappeared.

4 As he was so far away from Roma, he couldn’t see her. He hoped that he
was not too late. After running for several minutes, he saw her sprawled by the
side of the tracks. He asked her whether she was alright or not but there was no 20
response. There was also no help in sight – they were alone somewhere between
two stations five kilometres apart.

5 Baleshwar could see blood flowing out of a gash behind the young woman’s
head. Saying a silent prayer, he lifted Roma gingerly and made his way across the
tracks, looking out for trains and searching for a way out. He crossed a shrubbery 25
and followed the direction of the sounds until he found the road. Though exhaustion
started to creep in, all Baleshwar could think of was saving a stranger’s life. He
flagged the innumerable motorists who drove by but no one stopped to help.

6 Just when he was beginning to lose hope, a tempo-truck pulled over and its
driver, a middle-aged man, stepped out. With the driver’s help, Baleshwar laid 30
Roma in the back of the truck. Then, a traffic policeman arrived. He told them to
take Roma to a hospital in Airoli. Baleshwar disagreed as it was 10 kilometres
away.

7 Ten minutes later, they arrived at a small hospital. As the facility lacked
personnel and equipment, the on-duty physician advised that she be moved to a 35
nearby hospital. Her rescuers had no choice but to move her back into the truck.

SULIT 10 1119/2

Suddenly, Roma stirred and her eyes fluttered open. “What’s your name?” asked
Baleshwar who was with her in the back of the truck. After she had told him her
name, he asked her whom he could call. Weakly, she gave him her brother’s
number and then lost her consciousness again. 40

8 Borrowing the old man’s mobile phone, Baleshwar called her brother. He
related to Dinesh Talreja what had happened and informed him where they were
taking his sister. Roma and her rescuers arrived at Divine Multi-Specialty Hospital
and Research Centre minutes later. The medical director there, seeing the extent of
Roma’s injuries, admitted her immediately to the intensive care unit without any 45
paperwork. To Baleshwar’s regret, the driver, having done all he could, had slipped
away with his truck.

9 Although her X-ray showed that the injuries looked severe, all Roma needed
were deep wound sutures. In a few days, Roma made a full recovery. She was
amazed to learn of the manner in which she had been rescued. Eyes brimming with 50
tears, she thanked Baleshwar for saving her.

10 Baleshwar said that he was new to Mumbai. He noticed that people there
are afraid as they fear getting trapped in the courts or with the police. So why did he
do it? “She needed help,” Baleshwar simply said. “That day, it was Roma.
Tomorrow, it could be you or me by the tracks, bleeding and alone.” 55

Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
‘Forward, the Light Brigade!
Charge for the guns!’ he said
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

‘Forward, the Light Brigade!’

Was there a man dismayed?
Not though the soldier knew
Someone had blundered:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Cannon to right of them,

Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volleyed and thundered;
Stormed at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,

Rode the six hundred.
