Written Assignment Unit 7

In a previous unit, we discussed being a self-directed learner through mechanisms of self-

determination theory. That theory described three characteristics that must exist to be an intrinsic

and extrinsic learner; competent, confident, and autonomy; control. Those three qualifiers allow

one to fully engage in learning. This week I will present goal-setting theory. Goal-setting

principles highlight elements for the successful completion of goals. All goals must possess

clarity, a challenge, a commitment agreement, and positive and negative feedback(Locke and

Latham. 2006). When all components are in use, a feeling of success illuminates the mind,

making the goal more meaningful.

Throughout the pandemic, I have had moments of life reflection. I listed all the experiences in

my life that I did not quite hit the mark. I dropped out of college. I did not see college as my job

or discipline. Post pandemic, I perceived all my experiences as failures with small successes; I

did not reach my goal of graduating. I quit my job after I was elevated as an operations

specialist. I have set many goals for myself and did not see them through. I had perfect

performance ratings at work and occasionally at school, but I was not positively motivated.

Introspective moments brought me to the realization that lived in a mindset of lack. I thought I

lacked persistence, a vision, and I did not understand my purpose. That day, I told myself, there

are no failures, only lessons learned; goals can be extended. That mantra brought much need

self-regulation into my life. Once I demonstrated active control over my emotions and thoughts I

was better able to visualize my life and what I wanted to achieve.

My Aunt once told me that I needed tunnel vision to reach my goals and achieve milestones in

life. Hyper focusing caused a regression in my performance, making me a passive learner,

placing limitations on my acquisition of skills and information (Locke and Latham, 2006). I had

many introspective moments throughout the pandemic, bringing clarity to my mind and life. A

better understanding of how, why, what causes my adverse experiences came into my awareness.

In 2020 I decided to realign myself with my goals, this time being realistic, matching self of that

moment. This newfound motivation activated a side of myself I forgot existed. In October of

2020, I decided to challenged myself, I learned how to use a sewing machine, intending to make

cloth masks for my community. Once I learned how I used social media and marketed my cloth

face coverings, my slogan was “ mask up, for 8 bucks”. I set clear realistic goals. At first, the

feedback was neutral, but over time that changed, and I was the affirmed source for cloth face

coverings for my community. In doing this I gained a new successful characteristic to achieve

my goals, persistence, discipline, and reliability; I followed through and accomplished my

goals. My formation of realistic goals reinforced awareness of my goals set. Offer both extrinsic

and intrinsic rewards, that served as motivators.

In conclusion, coping with time is a complex concept to perceive. Societal values and norms

are conditioned into our minds as developmental milestones. Occasionally, we are shamed for

our failures, unknowingly conditioning fight or flight mechanisms to our survival. Those

moments of discourse cause us to realign our values, shaping a specific moment. Moments that

should be seen as life lessons. So, we set goals to monitor our future progress. Here is a list of

my personal goals, short-term to long-term. A realistic short-term goal, I will find a better

balance in work, school, and my social life; productivity. A challenging, but realistic mid-term

goal I have set; is to finish school faster than anticipated; proper stress management and self-

efficacy. Long-term, I will become a counselor and an integrated medicine specialist, helping

others achieve their healthiest state of existence. Being able to adapt to change is imperative for

success. Life is full of possibilities and unforeseen circumstances. When goals are realistic,

challenging, and motivating; commitment and success will follow, creating a healthy flow of

inspiration and success.
