INTRODUCTION
The physical and mental health of the people plays an
important role in the development of a nation. A healthy people
is the foundation of the social progress of any nation. The
emergence of new types of infectious diseases and the rise in
diseases such as heart diseases and diabetes are the reasons for
launching new types of health programs. Our government has
launched a number of health programs to ensure comprehensive
health care, as well as a number of health missions, so Aardram
mission is one among them.

What is Aardram mission


The Aradram Mission is a health mission officially
launched by the Governor of Kerala on November 10, 2016 in
Thiruvananthapuram as one of the four missions of the
NavKerala Mission with the objective of enhancing the
infrastructure of all hospitals in the State and providing better
service to the patient.

Objectives of Aardram mission

1. Enhance patient care by enhancing the infrastructure of all


hospitals
2. To make the service available to all irrespective of whether
they approach the institutions or not.
3. Make hospitals people friendly
4. The objectives of the Aardram project are to significantly
reduce the cost of treatment for the common man and to ensure
free treatment for the poor.

Family Health Center


Family Health Centers are health care providers under
the Local Self Government Institutions. As part of the Aardram
mission, 170 Primary Health Centers in Kerala have been
converted into Family Health Centers. It has been decided to
convert another 500 Primary Health Centers into Family Health
Centers.
Health services available to the general public from the
Family Health Center under the Aardram Mission

Service Schedule at Family Health Centers

Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.


Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Services available at the field level

a) Services of Junior Public Health Nurse


b) Services of the Health Inspector
c) Services of Asha Worker
d) Services of Anganwadi Worker

Services received from the Family Health Center as part of


the Aardram Mission

Aardram Mission is a part of the Nava Kerala mission ,


is a complete overhaul of the health system with an emphasis
on public health care.

1. Universal and comprehensive health care (service to all,


regardless of approach to institutions)
These include care, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and
palliative care.
2. Health Education Counseling Immunizations Medico Legal
Cases Institutional services such as pharmacy and laboratory as
well as field level services such as JPHN, HI and Anganwadi
Workers services for various public events are available from
the Family Health Center.

1. Therapeutic services
Treatment should be provided to all patients attending
the OPD of FHC adhering to the Comprehensive Primary
Health Care (CPHC) treatment guidelines. Patients who need a
higher level of care should be identified as per the red flag signs

and referred early to the appropriate level as per the treatment


guidelines. The follow up of these cases should be done from
FHCs.

Management of common symptoms

a.Fever: Common causes of fever are identified and treated


according to comprehensive primary health care guidelines and
national guidelines.

b.Cough: Common causes of cough are identified and treated.


TB testing for patients is also being conducted
c. Detects and treats the causes of arthritis, abdominal pain,
headache, etc. Anemia: Patients are screened for anemia and
dewormed at regular intervals to detect and treat the cause of
the deficiency
B. Infectious diseases

Detects and treats patients at risk for infectious diseases


such as jaundice, dengue, leptospirosis, and malaria fever,
based on symptoms and test results.

Tuberculosis:
Identifies people at risk for tuberculosis and refers them
to designated microscopic cells for diagnosis. In addition,
treatment is provided in accordance with the guidelines of the
updated disease control program.
Leprosy:
Patients with signs or symptoms of leprosy are screened
and treated with various medications as per the norms. In
addition, conducts surveys of potential victims who have
contact with diagnosed cases of leprosy, then identifies
disabilities and takes remedial action, and provides
rehabilitation services.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases:


The Family Health Center provides training and HIV
testing facilities for the detection of sexually transmitted
diseases and provides health education to patients' partners on
HIV testing and safe ways.

B. Non-communicable diseases
Emphasis is placed on detection and treatment of infectious
diseases as part of the Aardram mission. Now a days Non
Infectious diseases, such as diabetes and high blood pressure,
have become more common in adolescents.Therefore, to
diagnose diabetes, everyone over the age of 30 is screened,
diagnosed and treated according to the criteria, then
complications are diagnosed and treated and referred if
necessary.

1.Hypertension
Everyone over the age of 18 is screened for high blood
pressure. Complications are identified and treated, and health
counseling and classes are conducted.

2. Asthma (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)


The Swas Clinic is a clinic run by the Family Health
Center for people with conditions such as asthma ,Chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease. Identification of a probable case
of COPD/Asthma based on clinical features and staging of
illness by spirometry as per SWAAS guidelines . Screening of
all COPD patients for tuberculosis as per RNTCP guidelines
then Provide treatment for minor exacerbations .Follow up of
all COPD/Asthma patients at frequent intervals.

3. Mental illness
Ashwas Clinic is a clinic run every Friday at the Family
Health Center to diagnose mental illness, depression and other
mental health problems as part of the Aardram mission.
Diagnoses minor mental disorders and provides counseling and
treatment. The patients with severe mental problems are
referred to a psychiatrist for specialist treatment.

4. Cancer:
Provides screening test for the diagnosis of cancer of the mouth,
breast and cervix, and provide advise for patients regarding
oral self examination and breast self examination. Identification
of a probable case of cancer based on signs/symptoms. Referral
of all probable patients found on screening for expert
management. Follow up of all patients referred back from
higher centres and they provide palliative care wherever
necessary.

5.Surgical Categories:
1. Accidents and injuries, minor injuries are treated and
critically injured patients are taken to higher centers after first
aid.
2. Burns: Treats burns below 10% and
Referral of all deep burns, burns >10% body surface
area, burns in children and elderly for expert management after
stabilization
3. Treatment for minor injuries is available from the
Family Health Center. Provide incision and drainage of minor
abscesses and treatment of ulcers including diabetic foot and
bed sores . Removal of superficial foreign bodies are also done
from Family Health Centres.
6. Treatment for pediatric diseases:
Severe lung diseases, diarrhea, genetic disorders and
developmental delays are identified and provide treatment for
them and Screening of all infants and children for delayed
milestones of development then early identification of children
with congenital anomalies or developmental delays and referral
to District Early Intervention Centre/higher centre . Family
health centre provide follow up of all children referred back
from higher centres . Acute lung diseases are diagnosed and
infected children are identified and treated according to the
guidelines

The child with diarrhea is treated according to the


degree of dehydration and referred if necessary.
Similarly, immunizations for children are given every
Wednesday.

7. Adolescent Friendly Health Services:


As part of the Aardram project, a teen clinic is held
every Saturday to address potential health issues in adolescents,
provide health education, and identify risky behaviors.

8. Gynecological diseases
Prenatal care and postpartum care. Pregnancy diagnosis
by urine test, after which all pregnant women are registered and
issued Maternal and Child Care Card. Pregnant women after 28
weeks are referred to a maternity care facility. All breastfeeding
mothers are given calcium and iron folic acid tablets. Provides
information on projects such as Pradhan Mantri Surakshit
Matritva Abhiyan, Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram .

Laboratory services:
Laboratory services have also been augmented a part of
Aardram mission, as part of which the laboratory schedule
Monday to Saturday: 8am to 4pm and if there are 2
technicians there will be 8am to 6pm.

Laboratory tests: Complete blood count, cholesterol test,


kidney function test (RFT), HIV test, jaundice test, typhoid test,
urine test and stool test can now be done at the Family Health
Center.

Services available from the pharmacy:


The pharmacy service is now available seven days a
week,
Monday to Saturday: 9.00 am to 6.00 pm :Sundays: 9.00
am to 1.30 pm
Medicines as per the CPHC treatment guidelines should
be dispensed from FHC and life-sustaining medications are
available from the Family Health Center.

Health Education Guidance Services:


Provides counseling services for pregnant women,
couples, adolescents, people with lifestyle diseases and
substance abuse.

Public Health Services:


Implementation of National and State Health Programs as part
of the Aardram program to control infectious and non-
communicable diseases. Services provided to households and
palliative care in needy areas, as well as rehabilitation services.
In addition to rehabilitation Services Continuing Treatment of
Persons with Disabilities are provided as a part of Aardram
mission and it include locating and rehabilitating children with
intellectual, mental, visual and hearing impairments, and
providing wheelchair-assisted mobility aids and medical
assistance to to them. Medico-legal services
Services to all Medico legal cases
Services related to Public Health Acts, POCSO, Protection of
women against domestic violence act 2005 etc. are also
available from Family Health Centres.

Issuance of Certificates:
In addition to health care services, some certificates are
also issued through the Family Health Center as part of
Aardram mission. They are as follows:
Medical and fitness certificate
* Age certificate
* Certificate for availing financial aid for treatment
* Certificate of Health
* Certificate of Health for food handlers
* Sanitation Certificate
* Accident cum wound certificate
* Treatment Certificate
* Drunkenness certificate
CONCLUSION
The progress of a country depends on the health of its people.
To make universal and comprehensive health care services
available to the people in a patient-friendly and people-friendly
manner at the lowest possible cost in order to mold a healthy
nation. I think everyone understands about the services of the
Aardram project, which was started to ensure health services in
a way that is patient-friendly and people-friendly. Therefore,
each of us has a role to play in shaping a healthy nation.
Therefore, everyone should make good use of these services
provided to us by the Government through Family Health
Centers. So we can build a healthy society.
