QMT181 Tutorial 4

1. The document provides instructions for calculating various statistical measures from sample data sets, including: - Mean, median, and standard deviation of sales data from 15 employees - Measures of central tendency, dispersion, position, and skewness for age data from new business founders 2. Key measures calculated for the age data include: - Mean of 38.83 - Median of 37.1 - Mode of 35.1 - Standard deviation of 10.7 - First quartile of 31.1 and third quartile of 43.1 3. The distribution is determined to be positively skewed to the right, with a skewness value of 0.162.

Tutorial from lesson in video 4

1. The number of sales made by each of the 15 members of sales staff of a company was
recorded as follows:
142 101 137 128 124 121 133 77 127 108 139 68
112 123 130

Calculate the value of mean, median and standard deviation

a. Mean = (142+101+137+128+124+121+133+77+127+108+
139+68+112+123+130) / 15
= 1170/15
= 118

b. Median = 15+1 / 2
=8

c. Variance = 215 464 - 1 368900/15

15 - 1
= 8871.71
Standard deviation = √8871.71
= 94.19
2. The table below shows the age distribution of individuals starting new companies. For
this distribution, find;
i. Measure of central tendency
ii. Measure of dispersion
iii. Measure of position
iv. Measure of skewness

Age Frequency
[20-29] 11
[30-39] 25
[40-49] 14
[50-59] 7
[60-69] 3

i) Measure of central tendency

Age f Cf Class boundary Class fx fx²

midpoint,x

20-29 11 11 19.5-29.5 24.5 269.5 6602.75

30-39 25 36 29.5-39.5 34.5 862.5 29756.25

40-49 14 50 39.5-49.5 44.5 623 27723.5

50-59 7 57 49.5-59.5 54.5 381.5 20791.75

60-69 3 60 59.5-69.5 64.5 193.5 12480.75

Total 60 2330 97355

a. Mean
= 2330
60
= 38.83

b. Median
= 29.5 + [ (60/2) - 11) / 25 ] x 10
= 29.5 + (19/25) x 10
= 37.1

c. Mode
= 29.5 + [ (25-11) / (25-11)+(25-14) ] x 10
= 29.5 + [ 14 / (14+11) ] x 10
= 35.1

ii) Measure of dispersion

Actually, we dont have the formula
to find range for group data, we
a. Range can only calculate the range for
= 69.5 - 19.5 group data. sorry for my mistake,
= 50 pls refer to the formula given in
the slide

b. Variance
= [97355- ( (2330)² / 60) ] / 60
= 97355- 90481.67 / 60
= 114.56

c. Standard deviation
= √114.56
= 10.70

d. Interquartile range (Q3-Q1)

= 43.1-31.1
= 12

e. Semi-interquartile range
= 43.1-31.1 / 2
=6
iii) Measure of position

a. First quartile (Q1)

= 29.5 + ( 15-11 / 25 ) X 10
= 29.5 + 0.16(10)
= 31.1

Third quartile (Q3)

= 29.5 + ( 45-11 / 25 ) x 10
= 29.5 + 1.36(10)
= 43.1

iv) Measure of skewness

= 38.83-37.1 / 10.70
= 1.73 / 10.70
= 0.162 (PCS= +ve value)
Skewed to the right.
