Ruby
The birthstone for the month of July is Ruby, a mineral and gemstone variety of Corundum (Al 2O3). It came
from the Latin word ruber meaning red - representing love and passion. Due to the rarity, hardness, beauty,
and what they believe as “mystical powers”; ruby has been well-known in ancient India as the king of precious
stones. Ruby belongs to “The Big Four” gemstones and jewelries, gaining the attention of jewelers and
gemologists.
Corundum appears with vast varieties of colors; Ruby is the variety that appears as red due to trace amounts
of Chromium (III) in its crystal lattice. The mineral belongs to the Oxides mineral group with a hexagonal crystal
system.
