Examples for bringing out the topic in the introduction


1. School Uniform
Individualism is a fundamental value in Hong Kong. Everyone believes in the right to express his or her own
opinion without fear of punishment. This value, however, is coming under fire in an unlikely place – the school
classroom. The issue is school uniforms.
2. Cohabitation
With the advent of the new millennium, a lot of traditional values are under attack. What used to be a taboo
experience is now accepted as a regular practice and not to be frowned upon.
3. Korean Culture
And now comes the Korean whirlwind that is captivating Hong Kong. Today, it is actually not that difficult to come
face to face with the creeping in and taking hold of this Korean mania thriving across all walks of life, especially
amongst the younger generation.
4. Illegal Downloading
It is no surprise that the Internet has won the title of the most significant modern-day invention. This incident
aroused the much reverberation in the information technology and entertainment industry, as well as among
netizens in general.
5. Choosing not to have a Child
Recently, it has become a trend for married couples opting not to have children of their own. Instead, they choose to
adopt pets like cats, dogs or fish. With the economy toppling down since 1997, a lot of people simply cannot afford
to have kids.
6. Fighting a War
Peace on earth has always been the ultimate dream of humanity since times immortal. When it comes to fighting a
war, most people would immediately be reminded of all the casualties and abhorrent images associated with it.
7. Slimming
These days, it is just impossible to avoid reading a newspaper or watching television without being bombarded by
advertisements or commercials extolling the virtues of being lean and mean.
8. Falling Birth Rate
Nowadays, it seems that more and more people remain single and delay marriage. As a result, the birth rate of Hong
Kong has dropped steadily year by tear since the 1970s and is now one of the lowest in the world/ According to a
research, there are only 0.8 births for every woman of childbearing age. The falling number of births is getting more
and more serious and has become a social problem and concern of the whole society. That is why recently the
Government advocated that couples should consider having three children to try to stem the territory’s falling birth-
rate.
