A. Introduction

1. Choose the modal that best completes the given statements.
2. Pick-out modals found in an infographic.
3. Understand the different types of modals based on its message / function in the
sentence.
4. Complete sentences using appropriate modals.
5. Writing a dialog using modals.

Brief Description of the lesson:


This lesson will introduce different types of modals. The initial part of the lesson will
tell you how modals are used in a sentence. There will be a guide on which auxiliary
verb is present and how you can use it in forming modals. This will then lead you to
identify the modal you can see in every sentence and come out with meaningful
sentences to be used in a dialogue.

Learning Task 1: Imagine that you are in a new school. Match the signage below
with their corresponding meaning. Write your answers in your notebook. (PIVOT

What is it?

Modals are auxiliary or helping verbs Modals are those helping verbs, which
express the ‘mode’ or ‘manner’ of the actions indicated by the main verbs. They
express modes such as ability, possibility, probability, permission, obligation, etc. The
most commonly used modals are shall, should, will, would, can, could, may, might,
must, ought to, used to, need and dare. Modals are used to: ASK PERMISSION—
may, can, could; MAKE A REQUEST—can, could; EXPRESS A POSSIBILITY—may,
might, could; GIVE ADVICE OR SUGGESTION—should; EXPRESS NECESSITY OR
COMPULSION—must, have to; EXPRESS PROHIBITION—must not, should not;
EXPRESS A PROMISE OR INTENTION—will, shall; EXPRESS A WISH—may
