Statement of Purpose Name: Akash R Patel Course Applied For: Masters of Management For Engineers Date of Birth: 30 January 1993
I stay in a nuclear family of Gujarat and born in a place name Unjha, Mehsana, Gujarat. My father is
having his own fabrication business in India. My Mother is a home-maker. I have a younger sister
who is currently persuing her Bachelor of Engineering in India.
I would like to brief you about my academic background. I completed my 10 th from Gujarat State
Educational Board with 72.92% in March 2008. I then completed my 12 th with 60.20% from
Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Board in March 2010 with science as my major stream. I
then completed my Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering with 7.03 CGPA out of 10 from Gujarat
Technological University in May 2014.
After completion of my bachelor studies I got an opportunity to work as a lecturer with Bhagwan
Mahavir Education Foundation. Working as a lecturer was something new to me but I am
fascinated to learn and experience new things so I took up this opportunity and started working
from July 2014 to May 2017 (Documents Attached in Visa file). Though I worked for so long into
teaching field, I did not get the growth and enhancement in my career which I was looking for. I
realized there isn’t any kind of development into my career. Working as a lecturer will not help me
to achieve my future and career goals.
During that I did a keen analysis that the knowledge gained during my graduation was very much
on theoretical base wherein I wanted to persue my further qualification with practical elements as
well as I wanted to have a research component so that it would be more beneficial for me when I
would have to move towards implementing the same in the realistic scenario. I was definitely
aware that in order to compete in this cut through market I need to hold a qualification that would
reach me to the level which in a minimum time frame and also, I wanted to persue my higher
education in the field which is inclined towards the level of management so that I would end up
getting dual qualification added to my profile.
I started my research in India for the same but I realized that Mechanical engineering is one of the
most popular engineering courses in India and has been one of the major driving forces of high
technology over the past few decades. Considering how popular this course is, getting admissions
into prestigious institutions such as the IITs and NITs, IISc, Bangalore, IIT Bombay, Madras, Delhi,
Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Delhi University, Mumbai University and Pune University is hugely
competitive as it involves a lot of entrance examination too. Even when costing of the same is taken
into consideration I understood that it will be more or less similar as compared to that by studying
overseas.
Also, my field over the period has become a very narrow field and that is the reason I wanted to go
for a qualification with can lead to me to diversified career and that is the reason I decided to
pursue Masters of Management for Engineers which is basically Engineering Management.
Engineering management is a specialized field of management concerned with the engineering
sector. Reflecting industry demand for management-focused engineers (or from the opposite
perspective, managers with an understanding of engineering), a growing number of specialized
engineering management degrees are available to help me to develop the knowledge and skills
needed for these roles. Engineering management course, will develop industrial engineering skills,
knowledge and expertise, alongside knowledge of business and management techniques, strategies
and concerns. I definitely knew that it would not be possible in India, thus through consulting
different representatives and attending various education fairs and meeting different universities I
understood that the first step before finalizing the destination for my further education I would
have to clear the English proficiency examination.
Thus, I started my preparation for the IELTS during my job from July 2016 till August 2016 for
IELTS soon after my graduation and secured an overall score of 5.5 in September 2016. After
securing the bands I did start visiting few of the educational agents regarding the course and
country. During that tenure my mother health wasn’t good so I had to postpone my plans for 9
months. Once her health was ok I started my research regarding the university. As my Ielts score
wasn’t meeting the university admission requirement I have to undertake a 10 week of elicos prior
to my master studies. Making a decision for the same was not so easy. The cost of redoing the
English Test in my home country is economical. However, the disadvantage to reappearing the
examination is, the coaching centres are not having good faculty. At times, the faculty teaching
English will explain the methodologies in regional language. Due to this, I will not able to gain any
significant improvement in the learning pattern. So, this will not yield good results. After analysing
this, I decided to study 10 weeks of ELICOS Program in Australia prior to the commencement of the
main program. Even though this will cost me additional AUD 3,500, but I am sure it will be more
beneficial.
English is not a primary language in my home country. It is treated as only as a second language.
Australia being an English-speaking Country, the English Language Courses are also designed with
modern and cutting edge. Teachers are highly qualified as they are supposed to maintain the
accreditation. ELICOS course focuses on all the main areas i.e. reading, writing, speaking and
listening. Especially for the students, key modules are speaking and writing because, we have to
communicate only in English with everyone and do all our presentations, assignments etc. in
English. Hence this course will help in polishing our skills in all the key areas which will ultimately
result in applying the language in right way while pursuing my degree program.
After my GTE from CQU I received offer letter on 16 th August 2017 meanwhile my parents
understand the finance requirement and they started preparation for same. After done all
documentation I submitted finance on 23rd August 2017 and I got approval on 26th August 2017
and paid the fees on 6th September 2017 to the University.
I have researched over many countries for persuing my further education. My research made me
understood that in countries like UK has 1 year of Masters Programs which is not recommendable
by the working system in India as they believe the course would have been compressed. Countries
like Canada is more inclined towards the diploma education which I know that once I come back to
India will have no importance on the same. While USA has a lot of universities and it is very difficult
to judge as which course and which university to persue for the same. Australia is currently the
third most popular destination for international students in the English-speaking world, behind the
United States and the UK. Many international students choose to study there like me because of the
cultural diversity, friendly natives, and high quality of education. Schools and employers all over
the world recognize degrees from Australian schools. Graduates from Australian schools are highly
sought after due to the impressive international reputation of the Australian education system.
This system is carefully regulated by the Australian government in order to maintain the high
standards of education associated with the country. The reason for me to choose Australia because
Institutions in Australia offer a wide variety of courses and degrees, so I am being an international
student can easily find the school and field that are right time. The first decision international
students have to make when choosing a degree program is which type of school is most catered to
their needs and interests. Australia is at the forefront of new technology and innovations. Students
who study in Australia can take advantage the country’s impressive technology and research
resources. The major reason for choosing Australia for my course was due to the fact that it
includes quality control in food processing, developing new pharmaceuticals or new materials,
improving industrial processes and teaching. Some chemists work at the bench all their
professional lives, although usually progressing in the level of skill and responsibility required,
they commonly move into various levels of management after an initial period in a laboratory.
Thus, qualification from Australia shall give me a dual advantage inclusive of technical and
Management level when I come back to India.
When I searched for a similar program across Australia in few the fees were very high compared to
CQU wherein CQU is having $24000 AUD per annum wherein Deakin University, Swinburne
University, La trobe University was having $29000, $ 31000 and $32000 respectively. Also, I
noticed that my course is entirely Masters of Management for Engineers by CQU wherein the
course by other universities had Engineering Management as one of their specialization. CQU's 2-
year Master of Management (Engineering) is ideal for engineers seeking professional development
to enhance their employability. My research says that the education curriculum focuses on the
management of engineering projects with an emphasis on strategy and human resources. This
education course instructs students in evaluating, planning, and managing areas of human
resources such as work, employment, organisation, and people. I would be able to gain the skills in
developing solutions to management projects such as governance, systems theory, leadership,
management, and strategic integration. The program's focus on practical experience and a
supervised research project or industry project provides you with advanced project management
skills. The course structure is extremely beneficial which consists of core subjects such as Research
in Business, Strategic Business Management and Professional Projects which cover business
analysis in market scenario. Out of 12 core subjects 8 which include People and Organization,
Organizational Governance and leadership, Operational Management, Innovation and Sustainable
business development, Project Management Concept, System Science and Engineering, Accounting
and Management Decision Making, Management Law. There is range of facultative topics from
which student get flexibility to choose 4 electives. The best part is it is providing me with an
International Student Scholarship of 20% on my total 2 years’ fees that too due to my credit which
is a boon to my profile. For the integral duration, of course I will able to get ample knowledge of
management to use the application in realistic scenario. The university also provides a 10 week of
internship attached in the program.
The main goal would be completing my degree with renowned grades from one of the best
University and come back to India because I am the only son of my father and along with my career
I definitely have to take care of the parents and handle the assets of the family. There is a definite
strong incentive to return as I belong to a traditional Gujarati family wherein we have always
stayed together with my parents and I am very close to my family and they have agreed to support
my decision to pursue higher education only with a condition of returning after completion as it is
mentioned in my family “will” that we children will not be eligible to inherit any assests if we
decide to either stay separate from our parents or settled abroad and thus settling in abroad in not
in the list at all. Therefore, there is a strong incentive to return to India and not remain in Australia.
There will an asset worth INR 2.5 crore which will be on name as per the legal will of my parents
after the age of 25 and thus the responsibility of managing the same also will increase on a timely
basis. In India, the chemical industry is among the established traditional sectors of the country,
playing an integral role in the country’s economic development. Thus there is huge demand for
Mechanical engineering graduates in the current market scenario thus after completing my
Australian qualification my skills on the management side of the course will differentiate me with
those in India and I would have a great opportunity to work with top MNC’S such as I am aware
that Mechanical engineering pass out gets job in core mechanical engineering companies such as
Mahendra and Mahendra, Suzuki , SIEMENS, TATA, Reliance, Adani Group on various position such
Engineering Project Co-ordinator , Senior Lead Analyst, Cost Systems Analyst, Industrial
Management Engineer with a package of 60000-70000 per month. This career plans will be
achieved by my research which I have done already by doing a comparison on salaries and the
positions available in the market through shine.com, monster.com, indeed.com wherein I have
attained these salaries and the demand in the market. Also I am sure that after gaining
international qualification and working on post study work permit for a year I will be able to able
gain this salary and this I can state from an example of one of my neighbor who has got his
qualification from CQU and is now in India and working for TATA Motors and is getting 65000 INR
per month wherein my other friend who has completed his Masters of Mechanical from Gujarat
University is working at Adani and earning 28000 INR per month which clearly states the salaries
compared from the qualification attained from India versus Australia.
> During the study time I can do a part time job for 20 hours a week and 40 hours a
fortnight.
> I need to maintain 50% pass grade throughout the study program.
> I cannot change the university till 6 months upon the enrolment.
> Inform university/DIBP for the change of address or contact details within 7 days.
